Arsenal plot surprise swoop to sign Roberto Firmino
Arsenal are reportedly considering making a surprise swoop to sign former Liverpool star Roberto Firmino, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.
Having enjoyed great success during his time at Anfield, the Brazilian decided to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli as a free agent back in 2023. However, he hasn’t had a great time in the Middle East and has been left out of the Saudi club’s squad for the domestic league. He is now only eligible to play in the AFC Champions League Elite for them.
Fichajes state that Firmino is frustrated with his position at Al-Ahli and is willing to leave immediately by terminating his contract. His preference is to return to England.
Arsenal have positioned themselves to bring the South American back to the Premier League as they are in need of a new striker following Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz’s season-ending injuries.
The Gunners mounted a title charge in the last two seasons but were eventually pipped to the post by Manchester City on both occasions. Now, they have been mounting a title charge once again this term but are the second favourite to win this competition as Liverpool are at the top with a seven-point lead.
Firmino to Arsenal
Without a specialist centre forward, it is looking almost impossible for Mikel Arteta’s side to continue the title march. So, signing a new striker could help them in this regard.
Firmino is an experienced striker and is a serial winner as he won every possible major competition with Liverpool. Therefore, Arsenal need a player like him to take the next step and finally win the Premier League title.
However, the forward is set to turn 34 next summer and it would be difficult for him to step up his game and play at the top again following the Saudi Arabia stint.
But, if he can be purchased for free immediately then Arsenal can take a punt by giving him a short-term deal for the remainder of this season amid the absence of both Jesus and Havertz.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the North London club will eventually sign Firmino to bolster the frontline.
