Arsenal remain keen on signing Espanyol’s Joan García
Arsenal reportedly remain keen on signing Espanyol goalkeeper Joan García, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.
After letting Aaron Ramsdale leave the club last summer, the Gunners prioritised replacing the Englishman by signing the 23-year-old. They even submitted a formal proposal to hire him but the Catalan side eventually didn’t allow his departure.
So, having failed to purchase the Spaniard, Mikel Arteta’s side decided to sign Neto from AFC Bournemouth on a loan deal on deadline day to support David Raya.
But, the Brazilian will turn 37 next year so the North London club may not opt to hire him permanently. Therefore, they have seemingly started exploring the market to sign a new younger goalkeeper.
Fichajes state that Arsenal remain keen on signing García and are planning to submit a formal proposal to persuade the Catalan side to cash-in. The goalkeeper has a £21m release clause in his current contract and Espanyol don’t want to sell him unless his potential suitors such as Arsenal trigger it.
Garcia to Arsenal
Having ranked through the Catalan side’s youth system, García made his senior first-team debut back in 2022 before establishing himself as a key player for his boyhood club.
The young goalkeeper helped his side gain promotion last term and has been playing a key role in his team’s quest for survival this campaign.
He displayed excellent performance against Atletico Madrid away from home earlier this season and helped his side keep a clean-sheet. Moreover, he was outstanding versus Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabéu, although he conceded four goals.
The 6ft 3in tall shot-stopper is a talented player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in January or next summer.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will take on Brentford in the Premier League tonight before facing off against Brighton and Hove Albion next weekend. The Gunners have found themselves nine points behind league leaders Liverpool so they will have to keep winning their upcoming fixtures to close the gap with the Merseyside club.
