Arsenal reportedly remain interested in signing Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo this summer, as per the transfer journalist Chris Wheatley.
The Gunners identified the Ecuadorian as their primary target to strengthen their engine room back in January and submitted two official proposals worth up to £70m to sign the midfielder.
However, the Seagulls were reluctant to let their star man leave and rejected both offers. So, a deal didn’t materialise and in the end, the 21-year-old stayed at the AMEX Stadium.
After failing to purchase their priority target, Arsenal decided to shift focus to alternative options and signed Jorginho on deadline day from Chelsea.
But, despite securing the Italian’s signature, it has widely been suggested that the North London club are still looking to strengthen their midfield department for next season. They have been linked with numerous targets ahead of the summer window with Declan Rice being mentioned as the number one target.
Caicedo to Arsenal
However, Speaking on the National World YouTube channel, Wheatley has claimed that Arsenal remain interested in signing Caicedo and Mikel Arteta ‘likes’ the Ecuadorian. So, the Premier League leaders could revive their interest in signing the highly talented midfielder at the end of this season.
But, the journalist warned that negotiating with Brighton won’t be easy so luring Caicedo away from AMEX Stadium will be very difficult for Arsenal if they resurrect their interest in the upcoming transfer window.
When asked whether Arsenal could make a move for Caicedo this summer, Wheatley said:
“I don’t think that interest has waned since January. It was the price tag with Brighton. They are a tough club to negotiate with. They put price tags which they feel the players are worth. Caicedo they felt was worth more than £75m, it seems a lot of money. We know Caicedo is a player Mikel Arteta likes.”
Caicedo is technically sound, strong, excellent in linking up the play from defence to attack, brilliant in defensive contributions and also can chip in with some important goals.
I think he would be a better signing for Arsenal than Rice and considering both players have a pretty similar price tag, the Gunners should prioritise signing the Ecuador international – who is likely to cost around £90m – over the West Ham United ace at the end of this season.
