Arsenal could reportedly make a swoop for Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar, as per the 90min journalist Graeme Bailey.
Following a successful spell at the San Siro over the last few years, the Slovak is seemingly keen on taking a new challenge in his career and is looking to move away from the Nerazzurri at the end of this season.
The defender – valued at around £53m by Transfermarkt – has entered the final six months of his current contract and he has reportedly rejected an opportunity to sign an extension with Simone Inzaghi’s side. So, he is set to leave the club for free at the end of this season.
Speaking on 90min’s Talking Transfers podcast, Bailey has said that it came as a surprise that Skriniar is set to be available as a free agent and Arsenal are looking to take advantage of his current situation. However, signing the Inter ace won’t be easy as several Premier League rivals are also eyeing a move for him.
Skriniar to Arsenal
Bailey said:
“A lot English clubs are looking at this guy. I wouldn’t be surprised if Man United, Liverpool, City, Arsenal, Chelsea, any of them come in. They’re all throwing their hat into the ring on this one. They weren’t expecting him to a be free agent, he is. So, keep an eye on this one, I think we’ll see a lot of Premier League interest come up in the next few weeks.”
It has been suggested that PSG are leading the race to get the 27-year-old’s signature but Bailey has said that it is unlikely that Skriniar will join the Ligue 1 outfit without evaluating other options. And a club like Arsenal might be able to persuade the defender to move to the Emirates Stadium if they offer a lucrative deal to him.
Bailey said:
“I find it hard to believe he’ll accept PSG without having already looked at the market. These Premier League clubs have got to be making it known what he can earn in England. There might be quite mouth-watering figures for him.”
Mikel Arteta likes to deploy defenders who have the ability to play out from the back and Skriniar would be an apt option to play in the Spaniard’s system. So, signing a talent like Skriniar for free would be a great business by Arsenal should they manage to win the race for his signature.
He would provide top class competition for William Saliba and Gabriel next season, and with Arsenal set to return to the Champions League, they need a deep squad to be able to challenge on all fronts.
