Arsenal have suffered a major double injury blow with Kieran Tierney and Thomas Partey facing a spell on the sidelines.

Tierney missed last night’s disastrous 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace after suffering a knee injury while away with the Scotland squad during the recent international break.

The left-back completed the full ninety minutes during Scotland’s games against Poland and Austria but reported the injury when he returned to London Colney last week.

Mikel Arteta provided an update on the situation following Arsenal’s thrashing at Selhurst Park on Monday night, with the boss confirming that Tierney will see a specialist on Tuesday to determine the full extent of the problem.

However, the initial signs aren’t good as initial scans have shown there is damage in the knee. The Daily Mail claim that Arsenal fear Tierney could be ruled out for the rest of the season following his trip to the specialist today.

In a huge double blow, Partey is also facing a spell out. The midfielder started during Arsenal’s defeat to Palace but limped off midway through the second half after picking up an injury.

Arteta says it’s a ‘big concern’ as it looks like Partey has aggravated an old injury – although he didn’t specify which one. The Ghana international had a groin problem a few months ago so that may be what Arteta is talking about.

The boss told Arsenal.com:

on whether Tierney is out for the season…
He’s seeing a specialist tomorrow and we will know more about the extent of the injury then, but the feeling that he had it wasn’t really positive and what the scan showed either, but we will have to wait and see what happens.

on Partey’s injury…
I don’t know, but he felt something in the same area that he got injured previously, so it’s a big concern.

A muscle injury could rule Partey out for a few weeks so let’s hope it’s nothing serious. However, the real concern is Tierney. If he’s ruled out for the rest of the season, I fear that would end Arsenal’s top four hopes.

We saw against Palace last night that Nuno Tavares isn’t ready to be a first team regular for Arsenal. He was totally out his depth and had to be subbed at half-time. Granit Xhaka, Cedric Soares and even Bukayo Saka are other options at left-back but using any of them would disrupt the team in other areas. Hopefully Takehiro Tomiyasu can return soon as that would free Cedric to move to left-back.

It looks like Arsenal’s gamble of not strengthening in January and relying on a threadbare squad during the second half of the season could ultimately cost us fourth.
