Arsenal battling to sign Bruno Guimaraes in £40m deal
According to the Evening Standard, Arsenal are battling to sign Bruno Guimaraes in a deal that could be worth £40m but will face competition from Newcastle and Everton.
Mikel Arteta is expected to revamp his midfield options this year as it’s an area we desperately need to strengthen. Thomas Partey is finally starting to show the kind of form he produced at Atletico Madrid and Albert Sambi Lokonga looks to be a terrific prospect for the future.
However, we need another top class central midfielder and an upgrade for Granit Xhaka. The Swiss international can be a useful member of the team at times but too often he’s shown himself to be a liability, so we need a long-term replacement.
Guimaraes has long been linked with a move to Arsenal and we’ve been keeping a close eye on his progress having first been alerted to his potential while he was at former club Athletico Paranaense.
The Evening Standard says Arteta is keen to lure the Brazilian international to the Emirates Stadium and while Lyon are determined to keep hold of Guimaraes this month, they may be forced to cash-in if £40m is put on the table in the summer.
The Ligue 1 outfit would turn a nice profit as they paid just £17m to sign the midfielder in 2020 and £40m should be within Arsenal’s price range so a deal could be on the cards.
However, we aren’t the only club in the running as the Evening Standard says Arsenal will face competition from Newcastle and Everton. Usually we should be confident of winning that race but Newcastle have the wealth to blow any bid from Arsenal out the water.
The good news is Guimaraes will hopefully see sense and choose a club like Arsenal over the Magpies, so we should still be confident of luring the South American to the Emirates.
The 24-year-old would be a superb addition to Arteta’s squad if we could get a deal done, and Arsenal can help fund the move by selling Mohamed Elneny, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and possibly even Xhaka.
Let’s see how things go but I’d love to see us sign Guimaraes.
