Arsenal chiefs to fly out for transfer talks as Emery eyes deal to sign Swiss star

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are set to hold transfer talks with the agent of Eray Comert on Saturday as Unai Emery eyes a deal to sign the £7m-rated Basel defender.

The boss is keen to strengthen his defence this summer as we were woeful at the back once again last season and we’re reportedly in talks to sign Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney and Saint-Etienne centre-back William Saliba.

However, part of any deal to sign Saliba could involve loaning him back to the Ligue 1 outfit for next season and that will be a sticking point as Arsenal need reinforcements now, not in 12 months time.

It seems Emery is keeping his options open as the Daily Mail claim Arsenal chiefs are scheduled to travel to Switzerland for talks with Eray Comert’s agent on Saturday to discuss a possible move to the Emirates.

The 21-year-old is a product of the youth system at Basel and made 31 appearances for the Swiss giants last season but the Daily Mail says he’s keen to join Arsenal this summer if a deal can be agreed.

Obviously Basel will be reluctant to lose Comert but the newspaper suggests they’ll cash-in if £7m is put on the table. That kind of deal will be appealing to Arsenal as we’re strapped for cash this summer with Emery having around £45m to spend after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

We need to bring in a left-back, box-to-box midfielder and a winger, as well as a centre-back, this summer so Emery needs to be clever with his money and Comert could be seen as a shrewd piece of business if the club feel he’s good enough to make it at Arsenal.

The Swiss Under-21 international reportedly spent time in London working on his fitness during the summer but the centre-back is now in Munich with the rest of the Basel squad preparing for the new season.

No doubt he’d jump at the chance to leave to complete a move to Arsenal if we can agree a deal during talks this weekend but we’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days.
