Wenger explains why Wilshere & Lacazette missed defeat to Leicester
Arsene Wenger has explained why Jack Wilshere and Alexandre Lacazette missed Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat to Leicester City on Wednesday night.
The boss made several changes from the side that thrashed Burnley at the weekend with Wilshere and Lacazette among the players to be left out of the starting eleven at the King Power.
Aaron Ramsey came in for Wilshere in midfield while Danny Welbeck replaced Lacazette in attack as Wenger freshened things up for his penultimate game in charge.
The Frenchman has now explained that Lacazette was simply rested after starting against Burnley and Atletico Madrid in the lead-up to the trip to Leicester last night.
Wilshere’s absence was a little more spontaneous as the midfielder initially travelled to Leicester but had to rush back to north London to attend the birth of his child after his wife was induced.
Wenger told Arsenal.com:
on why Lacazette didn’t play…
Rest. He played at Madrid, he played on Sunday. I rotated the strikers a little bit.
on Jack Wilshere and his future…
First of all he was with us [tonight]. He had to go back because his wife was induced.
Unfortunately the changes didn’t work last night as we slumped to our seventh consecutive away defeat thanks to a 3-1 loss at the King Power which still leaves us without a point on the road in 2018.
Kostantinos Mavropanos was harshly sent off in the 15th minute just seconds after Leicester had taken the lead and while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelled things up early in the second half, a Jamie Vary penalty and a late goal from Riyad Mahrez consigned us to another defeat.
