Arsenal star tells agent to secure Barcelona move – reports
According to the Express, Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil has instructed his agent to negotiate a move to Barcelona before the transfer window shuts this summer.
While the majority of the transfer speculation in recent months has focussed on Alexis Sanchez, people seem to have forgotten that Ozil is also in the final year of his deal and is yet to sign an extension.
The German playmaker claimed earlier in the summer that he was happy at Arsenal and wanted to agree a new deal when he returned to pre-season but as yet nothing has been signed.
The 28-year-old was well below his best during our dramatic 4-3 win over Leicester City last night but there has been no suggestion he was looking to leave this summer.
Until now that is, as the Express are citing reports from Don Balon that claim Ozil has told his agent to get in touch with Barcelona to negotiate a move to the Nou Camp before the window closes.
Barca are in the market for another attacker after seeing Neymar join Paris Saint-Germain in a world record deal and so far they’ve been frustrated with their attempts to sign Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele.
The newspaper report suggests that Ozil wants to leave Arsenal and is hoping to take this opportunity to follow the likes of Alex Song, Cesc Fabregas and Thierry Henry in securing a move to Barcelona.
What to make of this reports?
Well, personally I don’t believe a word of it. Ozil has always maintained that he’s very happy in London and recently bought a new house so it makes no sense to look for a move with just a couple of weeks left of the window.
If he wanted out, we’d have been seeing stories leaked to the press all summer and his agent would have been touting him around all the big clubs, but we’ve seen none of that.
This is just a Spanish publication picking Ozil’s name out of thin air as they look for possible replacements for Neymar.
Ozil will stay at Arsenal this season but beyond next summer? We’ll have to wait and see….
