Mourinho frustrated by Man Utd’s decision to sell star to Arsenal
Jose Mourinho has vented his frustration at Manchester United’s decision to sell Danny Welbeck to Arsenal before he arrived at Old Trafford, according to the Mirror.
Welbeck joined United as a kid and came through their youth system before breaking in to the first team set-up in 2008, where he made almost 150 appearances for the first team.
However, he fell out-of-favour under former boss Louis van Gaal and eventually made a shock switch to the Emirates in 2014 after we agreed a £15m deadline day deal with the Red Devils.
Mourinho took over at Old Trafford after van Gaal was sacked last summer and the so-called ‘Special One’ has now named Welbeck as one of the players he would never have sold had he been in charge.
Speaking to Gary Lineker, Mourinho hit out at the previous United regime after criticising not only the players they let go but also their recruitment policy.
Mourinho is quoted by the Mirror as saying:
“Manchester United sold players that I would never sell, and bought players I would never buy,”
“I would have never sold [Angel] di Maria, Chicharito [Javier Hernandez], Danny Welbeck, never, no chance.”
I’m sure the United hierarchy will be delighted that their current manager is openly criticising their transfer dealings but I wouldn’t expect anything less from Mourinho.
It’s fair to say that Welbeck has endured a difficult career at Arsenal since joining from United as a number of injury problems have restricted him to making just 56 appearances.
I still think he’ll go on to be an excellent signing for us, however, even if he doesn’t become an Arsenal legend, at least we know his move to the Emirates upset Mourinho!
