Football economics: Xhaka makes the most expensive Premier League XI
It’s been another crazy summer in the transfer market as mega-rich Premier League clubs have taken their spending to record levels with over £1 billion splashed out on new talent.
Even the usually frugal Arsene Wenger has opened his chequebook with the Arsenal boss set to announce the arrivals of Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez in a double deal worth over £50m, taking his summer spending to around £90m.
Our biggest signing has been Granit Xhaka after we paid Borussia Mönchengladbach £34m for the Switzerland international midfielder making him our second highest ever signing behind the £42.5m arrival of Mesut Ozil in 2013.
If we look at what the most expensive Premier League starting eleven would look like, we see that Xhaka would make the cut in midfield but Ozil misses out as Kevin De Bruyne [£55m], Raheem Sterling [£44m] and Angel Di Maria [£59.7m] all eclipse the German international.
In total, the side would cost £476m, which is a staggering amount of money, although almost £90m of that comes from Manchester United’s recent purchase of Paul Pogba from Juventus.
Pogba is a great player with a huge future ahead of him but I don’t for one minute think he should have been worth £89.3m. As the infographic below shows, you could buy 14 Caribbean islands for that sort of money. I know which I’d rather own!
