Arsenal in talks to sign South American forward

Arsenal are in talks with the representatives of Palmeiras striker Gabriel Jesus about a possible move to North London in January, according to the Express.

Arsene Wenger has once again seen his squad decimated by injuries this season and it’s led to speculation that he’ll enter the transfer market this winter.

While most feel a midfielder should be the priority following injuries to Coquelin and Cazorla – and it may very well be – the boss is also supposedly keen on strengthening his attacking options.

It seems Arsene has his eye on one of Brazil’s hottest young talents as the Express claim that we’ve opened talks with the representatives of Gabriel Jesus.

The newspaper says we’ll now hold negotiations with his current club Palmeiras next week with a view to wrapping up a deal for the 18-year-old as swiftly as possible.

No potential fee is mentioned in the report while the Express also ignore the fact that Jesus may struggle to gain a UK work permit if we did agree a deal.

The teenager is a big talent and has already represented Brazil at Under-23 level after scoring 37 goals in 22 youth matches last season. However, with just four goals in 20 appearances for the Palmeiras first team this campaign, he’s not likely to break into the senior national team anytime soon so getting a work permit will be a challenge.

Even if we were successful, I don’t see how Jesus will have any real impact on our first team anytime soon so I’d only consider him as one for the future if he does end up coming to the Emirates in January.

I think the boss should be concentrating his efforts on signing a world class midfielder and another proven striker this winter as with them on board, we’d have a decent shot at the title this season.
