Arsenal confirm they’ve appealed Gabriel’s red card vs Chelsea

Arsenal have confirmed they have decided to appeal the red card shown to Gabriel against Chelsea on Saturday while they have also appealed against the three-match ban.

Gabriel was dismissed shortly before half-time for a silly kick out at Diego Costa following a lengthy altercation with the Chelsea striker that saw the Spanish international provoke a reaction from the Arsenal man.

Arsene Wenger admitted after the game that Gabriel deserved to be sent off after failing to control himself following the provocation from Costa.

However, it appears the club have had a change of heart after viewing video evidence as we’ve now decided to appeal the decision to send Gabriel off while we’ve also appealed the automatic three-game ban that the centre-back has been slapped with.

A statement on Arsenal.com said:

The club can confirm that it is appealing wrongful dismissal and the three-match ban given to Gabriel.

To me, the club know the red card won’t be rescinded completely but are hoping we’ll at least get the ban reduced to two games, if not one.  There was barely any contact and Gabriel was provoked by Costa, which will go in our favour.

The FA have today charged Gabriel with improper conduct for his behaviour following his dismissal so they are hardly likely to rescind the red card. [see full details of the FA charges here]

The best we can hope for is Gabriel gets his ban reduced to one game and he gets away with a warning for the improper conduct charge. The most likely outcome is he’ll get his ban reduced to two games, then given one game for the charge. Worst case, the three game ban is upheld and he gets an extra game for the charge.

We’ll know over the coming days whether the appeal is successful or not but Gabriel is certain to miss the Tottenham game on Wednesday, while he’s in danger of missing league games against Leicester, Man Utd and maybe even Watford.
