Arsenal Eyeing Spaniard But Remain Favourites To Sign No.1 Target

The Evening Standard are reporting that Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Iker Casillas’ situation at Real Madrid but remain favourites to sign No.1 target Petr Cech.

Arsene Wenger is expected to sign a new goalkeeper this summer and Cech has been widely touted as the bosses top priority for several weeks.

The Czech international is set to leave Chelsea after losing his first team place, and as I reported earlier, Arsene is reportedly ‘very optimistic’ he’ll get his man.

Man Utd are also keen on the 33-year-old but it’s believed Cech would prefer to remain in London which makes Arsenal the clear favourites for his signature.

Even reports in France today claim PSG have ended their pursuit as they believe the keeper is heading for the Emirates.

However, things can change quickly in football and as we wait for Cech to hold formal talks with Chelsea next week to determine his future, it seems the boss has drawn-up an alternative.

The Standard claim we’re keeping a close eye on Iker Casillas’ situation at Real Madrid and will move for the Spaniard if a deal for Cech falls through.

Casillas is expected to end his long-standing association with Madrid when, as expected, they sign David De Gea from Man Utd.

I’ve said for several weeks that Cech should be our No.1 target this summer and hopefully we’ll be able to get a deal over the line. However, if we can’t then Casillas would be an excellent back-up plan.

The 34-year-old may have endured a difficult couple of seasons but he was the world’s best not that long ago and it’s just confidence that’s been holding him back recently, so if we could restore his belief then he’d be a fine addition to the squad.

I still think we’ll end up getting Cech but it’s worth considering Casillas just in case things don’t work out with the Chelsea stopper.
