Wenger Eyes Move For World Class Hitman, See Him In An Arsenal Shirt
According to reports, Arsenal are eyeing a surprise move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer and could snap him up for just €15m.
Ibrahimovic has been at PSG since joining the club from AC Milan in 2012 and his 30 goals helped Laurent Blanc’s side retain the Ligue 1 title last season.
However, the Independent claim that the Swedish hitman is agitating for a move this summer as he’s apparently looking for a new challenge, and it led to talk of a shock move to England.
The newspaper suggests that Arsenal are leading the chase for his signature with Arsene Wenger understood to be keen to finally land the 33-year-old having missed out all those years ago.
Ibrahimovic famously called off a proposed move to Arsenal way back in 2000. Everything was agreed and he had even been pictured wearing his new No.9 shirt [see pic below]. However, the egotistical striker pulled the plug after Arsene insisted on the then 19-year-old proving himself during a trial.
Speaking in 2012, Ibrahimovic told reporters:
“Arsene gave me the famous red and white jersey – the No 9 shirt with Ibrahimovic on it and I was so pleased I even posed for a picture wearing it.
“It was a fantastic moment for me. Arsenal had a great team then and here was an Arsenal shirt made just for me.
“So then I waited for him to convince me that I should join Arsenal. But he didn’t even try.
“He never actually made me a serious offer, it was more, ‘I want to see how good you are, what kind of player you are. Have a trial’.
“I couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘No way, Zlatan doesn’t do auditions’.
“I thought ‘You either know me or you don’t and if you don’t know me you can’t really want me’.”
Ibrahimovic has been one of those players that we regretted not signing but if this report is to be believed, then Arsene is keen to finally bring him to North London.
We’ll face stiff competition as Chelsea, Liverpool and AC Milan are also in the running with the Independent claiming that PSG could cash-in for just €15m (£11m) as Ibra has just one year remaining on his contract.
I think for that kind of money, we’d be mad not to take him on a short-term deal. He’s world class and would certainly be an upgrade on Giroud. Even if we got one good season out of him, he might repay his transfer fee and more by firing us to the title.
Ibrahimovic has famously won the title at every club he’s played for, so who’d bet against us lifting the Premier League trophy if we managed to land the enigmatic Swede this summer?
