Arsenal eye move to sign Atalanta’s Honest Ahanor
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, as per TEAMtalk.
After making Piero Hincapié’s loan deal permanent, the Gunners currently have Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel Magalhaes, alongside the Ecuadorian, as options to deploy on the left side of the defence.
Calafiori and Hincapié are even comfortable in the left-back position, while Myles Lewis-Skelly can provide cover in this position if needed. So, the North London club are currently well stocked in this area.
Still, Arsenal have been exploring options to add further depth, and TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal have expressed their interest in Ahanor after monitoring his development extensively.
Apart from Mikel Arteta’s side, Brighton and Hove Albion, Chelsea, and Manchester City are also in this race. However, the Seagulls have made the most concrete approach to finalise the operation.
They have already launched a formal £34m proposal, but La Dea have no intention of parting ways with the 18-year-old, having already decided to cashing-in on Ederson and Marco Palestra. So, they have rejected Brighton’s bid.
With the player’s existing deal set to run until 2028, Atalanta aren’t in any rush to sell him this summer, and they always play hardball to let their assets leave.
Ahanor to Arsenal
Arteta likes having versatile defenders, and Ahanor can play multiple positions. He is a left-footed centre-back by trait but is also comfortable in the left-back position.
After moving to New Balance Arena from Genoa last summer, the youngster played as a rotational option, scoring a solitary goal and keeping six clean sheets in 35 appearances across all competitions.
Having shown glimpses of his qualities in Serie A last term, he has already made two appearances for Italy national team at this tender age.
Ahanor is quick, strong, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions. He is a talented player and possesses high potential.
However, the Atalanta star, valued at around £26m by Transfermarkt, is still very young, and there are question marks over whether he is ready enough to help Arsenal achieve their lofty ambitions should he join.
Nevertheless, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services this summer.
