Mikel Arteta has admitted that Eberechi Eze’s hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur was no coincidence.
The Arsenal summer signing scored three goals in his first north London derby to help the Gunners to a resounding 4-1 win on Sunday.
Arteta described the performance as “Unbelievable,” but stressed that it was not by chance.
“Unbelievable,” Arteta said afterwards. “I look at the stats and when was the last time that somebody scored a hat-trick in a north London derby? Many, many, many years ago. So that tells you about the difficulty, but it’s not a coincidence.”
The Spaniard highlighted Eze’s preparation before the match.
He pointed out that the midfielder’s focus after the international break was key to the performance.
Arteta emphasised that hard work behind the scenes makes big moments possible.
Eze’s work ethic impresses Arteta
Arteta detailed how Eze returned from international duty determined to improve.
The manager praised Eze’s willingness to learn and his focus on details. He stressed that the midfielder actively asked questions about positioning, movement, and timing.
Arteta believes this intelligence and drive explain why the hat-trick came naturally.
“After international duty, he had two days off, and he said, ‘no, I want to train the next day, I want to practice.’ He was asking me questions about his positioning, about his pacing, about this. When a player has that talent, has a brain, and he has that willingness to be better and to make an impact in the team, these things happen.”
Eze’s three goals highlighted his confidence in front of goal and his readiness for big games. Arteta noted that the midfielder combined natural ability with smart decision-making, making the performance fully deserved.
Eze’s impact
The hat-trick now means Eze has registered five goals and three assists in all competitions this season.
His early contributions show he is adapting quickly to Arteta’s demands and Arsenal’s style of play.
Arsenal will now turn their focus to Europe, as they welcome Bayern Munich to the Emirates for the UEFA Champions League clash.
The team will rely on key players like Eze to continue their strong form and make an impact in a challenging fixture.
