Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Sporting CP star Geny Catamo, as per Caught Offside.
The 24-year-old initially joined the Lions’ youth system from Amora FC back in 2019. He went out on loan several times to play regularly and develop his career before establishing himself as a key player for the Portuguese giants in recent campaigns.
The Mozambique international helped his side win the Primeira Liga title in the last two seasons and also lifted the Taca de Portugal trophy last campaign.
After showcasing his qualities at the Jose Alvalade Stadium, Catamo has established himself as a regular member of his national team.
Now, Caught Offside claim that Arsenal have registered their interest in signing the Sporting star after monitoring his development closely last season.
Catamo is protected with a £51m release clause at Sporting, with his existing deal set to run until 2028. But, the Gunners could make a £21m bid to ‘test the water’.
Catamo to Arsenal
The report state that Arsenal aren’t the only club in this race as Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Everton, Fulham, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Atletico Madrid, Nice, Udinese, and Genoa are also keen on purchasing him. So, the North London club will have to overcome stiff competition to get the deal done.
Catamo is a versatile forward as he is comfortable playing on either flank. However, he played many games as RWB at Sporting, so his attacking numbers don’t look promising, scoring seven goals and registering two assists in 46 appearances in all competitions last term.
Catamo is a left-footed forward. He is quick, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, has the ability to play threading passes between the lines, can finish off his chances, and also works hard without possession.
Arsenal want a new left-sided forward and are also seeking a right winger as a backup option for Bukayo Saka. Catamo is comfortable playing on either side, so he might be a useful acquisition for Arsenal should they hire him. Moreover, Mikel Arteta likes having versatile players, so perhaps, he wants Catamo.
It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
