Arsenal remain keen on signing Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres
Arsenal reportedly remain keen on signing Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, as per the transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.
The Swedish international enjoyed a stellar campaign for the Lions last term, scoring 43 goals and registering 15 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions.
After showcasing his qualities in the Portuguese top-flight, the 26-year-old attracted a lot of attention from several big clubs around Europe this summer with Arsenal among those to have registered their interest. However, the Gunners eventually opted not to formalise their interest.
Gyokeres has continued to display his goal-scoring prowess for Sporting this season as well, scoring seven goals and registering three assists in five appearances in all competitions.
Now, reporting on HITC, Bailey has stated that Arsenal remain keen on signing Gyokeres and they could make a concrete approach to secure his signature next year.
Gyokeres to Arsenal
The journalist says apart from the North London club, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are also in this race but the player has decided to stay at Sporting and is now ready to sign a new contract.
Gyokeres is very happy to play under Ruben Amorim so he didn’t leave this summer as the young manager remained at Jose Alvalade Stadium despite being linked with a move away from the club. So, the striker is willing to stay because of the manager.
The former Coventry City star still has four years left in his current contract and has a £86m release clause included in his current deal.
After selling Eddie Nketiah to Crystal Palace, Arsenal have been left with Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus as the centre-forward position. Although the German has started the new season promisingly, Jesus has continued to struggle with injury problems in recent years so, the Gunners should hire a new striker to support Havertz.
Gyokeres has showcased his goal-scoring abilities in recent times so he could be a solid acquisition for Arsenal if they purchase him in January or next summer. But, it doesn’t look likely that they would be able to do that.
Meanwhile, after the international break, Arsenal will resume the league campaign when they face off against Tottenham Hotspur.
