Arsenal urged to rival Tottenham to sign Conor Gallagher

By on May 13, 2024

Former forward turned pundit Paul Merson has urged Arsenal to sign Tottenham Hotspur target and Chelsea star Conor Gallagher this summer.

With Thomas Partey struggling to stay fit over the last few years, the Gunners are reportedly planning to sign a new midfielder to replace the African in the upcoming summer window.

Numerous names have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium over the last few weeks with Douglas Luiz, Bruno Guimaraes and Martin Odegaard being among them. But, Merson has now told Mikel Arteta’s side to secure Gallagher’s signature to reinforce the engine room.

It has been suggested that Chelsea is hamstrung by FFP regulations this summer having splashed over £1B over the last few transfer windows. So, they could be forced to sell some of their stars to raise funds in order to balance the books.

The Blues are reportedly open to cashing-in on Gallagher – who is set to enter the final year of his current contract this summer – as he is a homegrown talent so his departure would bring a pure profit for the club.

Tottenham Hotspur are also seemingly interested in signing a new midfielder this summer and have identified Gallagher as a key option.

Arsenal told to sign Gallagher

Speaking on Soccer Saturday(via the Express), Merson has said that he is a ‘big fan’ of Gallagher and that the Chelsea star possesses every quality to play for any elite team in the English top-flight.

So, the former Gunner states that Arsenal should make a move for Gallagher as the midfield trio of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and the 24-year-old would be a great prospect for Arteta’s side.

Merson said:

“If they sell Conor Gallagher, it’s five steps back. I am a big Conor Gallagher fan, he gives you absolutely everything. I think he gets into virtually every team, probably Man City he doesn’t get into, any other team, I think he gets into.

“I would even go as far as to say at Arsenal you would, go and get him at Arsenal where you have got Rice, Odegaard and Gallagher. He gives you everything. He gives you energy, he gives you goals and he closes down. He is a fan’s dream. Everybody wants a trier.”

It has been suggested that Chelsea could accept a fee of around £50m to sell Gallagher so the Gunners will have to splash a big fee to lure the Englishman to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Gallagher is an energetic midfielder and could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, Arteta likes to have technically sound midfielders at his disposal and I think the Chelsea star might not be the best option to play in the Gunners boss’ system. Therefore, Arsenal could be better off exploring other options to reinforce their midfield department in the upcoming transfer window.
