Arsenal plotting January swoop for Amadou Onana

Arsenal are reportedly plotting a January swoop for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, as per the transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri.

The 21-year-old moved to Goodison Park last summer from LOSC Lille for a fee of around £31m. The midfielder has enjoyed a decent debut campaign in the Premier League so far this term, despite the Toffees’ dire form, scoring a solitary goal and notching up as many assists in 18 league appearances.

Having already secured two new signings this month, Arsenal are still seemingly exploring the market to strengthen the squad to maintain their title charge. And midfield is one of the positions where the Premier League leaders are seemingly looking to bolster before next week’s deadline.

Writing on Twitter, Tavolieri has said that although it was initially ‘unthinkable’ for Everton to sell Onana, the Toffees are in urgent need of money so may be forced to cash in this winter.

The journalist suggests that Arsenal could make a late move for the Belgian as they are looking for a player of his profile. However, the north Londoners will face tough competition from Chelsea and Newcastle.

Onana to Arsenal

Tavolieri said:

“Initially unthinkable, the departure of Frank Lampard coupled with the urgent cash needs at EvertonFC opens the door to a departure from Amadou #Onana this winter. ChelseaFC & ArsenalFC who are looking for a similar profile + NUFC shown their interest.”

The 21-year-old – valued at around £31m by Transfermarkt – still has four and a half years left in his current contract. So, it remains to be seen how much Everton will ask to sell the midfielder this month.

The youngster, standing at 195cm, is strong, good in the air, is good with the ball in tight areas and is also dynamic enough to press the opposition higher up the field. He is a defensive midfielder so he’d provide competition for Thomas Partey if he were to move to the Emirates Stadium.

With Arsenal lacking depth in their engine room, signing a new midfielder this winter would help in their quest of winning the title this term and the Everton man could be a very good option to have in the squad. So, it will be interesting to see whether Arsenal will make a concrete approach to sign the Belgian international before the window slams shut.
