Arsenal agree deal to sign Marquinhos, medical due

By on May 21, 2022

According to Goal, Arsenal have agreed a £3m deal with Sao Paulo to sign Marquinhos and the player is in London to undergo his medical.

It’s no secret that Arsenal are going to be active in the market this summer after sealing a return to Europe as our small squad needs some major reinforcements if we’re to cope with the extra games next season.

I think we need to strengthen throughout the squad but we certainly need to add a few attackers to the Arsenal ranks after allowing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to leave in January. With Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah also set for the exit door when their contracts expire next month and Nicolas Pepe expected to depart, we’re extremely short in the final third.

Mikel Arteta has focussed his efforts on bringing in talented young players under the age of 23 in recent windows and it looks like that trend is going to continue this summer.

Deal agreed

Marquinhos – a teenage attacker from Brazil – emerged as a key target earlier this month and Goal says Arsenal have finally agreed a deal worth around £3m to sign the player following extensive talks with Sao Paulo.

The report claims that the 19-year-old flew in to the UK late last week and has already been to London Colney to put the finishing touches on his move to the Emirates Stadium.

Marquinhos will now undergo a medical and official confirmation of the transfer is expected soon.  The South American youngster is expected to be announced as Arsenal’s first signing of the summer.

Who is Marquinhos?

The Brazilian U17 international is predominantly a left-footed winger who prefers to play from the right side of attack, but he can also operate through the middle.

Marquinhos is a product of the Sao Paulo youth academy and has already scored four goals in his 39 appearances – mostly off the bench – since making his debut last year.

The teenage winger won’t be ready for the first team straight away but he’s expected to be given a chance to impress with the squad in pre-season. If he does well, he may go on the pre-season tour of the US.

He isn’t the answer to our goal-scoring problems and I’m sure Arteta is going to bring in more established names this summer, but Marquinhos is an exciting one for the future. Let’s hope he turns out to be another Gabriel Martinelli.
