Team news: Partey & Tomiyasu set to return for Arsenal’s trip to Wolves
Mikel Arteta will have a much stronger squad available to choose from when Arsenal take on Wolves at Molineux on Thursday night.
The boss was short of options before the break with a number of players unavailable for selection due to various issues. It left Arteta having to select five academy players on the bench for the 0-0 draw with Burnley last time out.
However, the Spaniard has confirmed a huge boost with the news that Takehiro Tomiyasu is back in full training. The full-back has been struggling with a calf injury lately which has forced him to miss Arsenal’s last three matches.
Tomiyasu is now back in training and will be assessed ahead of the trip to Wolves tomorrow night. Arteta says they won’t rush the Japanese international back but hopefully he’ll be involved at Molineux.
Arteta told Arsenal.com:
on Tomiyasu…
He’s there. He had a recurring injury in the same place so we have to be careful with him but he’s been training hard. Let’s see if he’s available or not.
If Tomi isn’t risked, then Cedric Soares could start at right-back after returning from a groin injury that ruled him out of the draw with Burnley.
Partey and Xhaka return
Arsenal will also be strengthened in midfield as Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka return from suspension. They both missed the Burnley draw due to bans but are now available for selection again and will no doubt start together in the middle of the park.
Mohamed Elneny could be another option in midfield as he’s back in north London following his participation at the African Cup of Nations.
Nicolas Pepe returned from the AFCON late last week so he’s expected to be in the squad against Wolves. However, the winger is likely to be named on the bench once again.
So, if Tomi, Soares and Elneny are passed fit to return along with Partey, Xhaka and Pepe, then six players will be back in contention for the trip to Molineux.
That will be huge news for Arteta as he looks for a win over Wolves to close the gap on fourth-placed West Ham to just a point.
