Arsenal 5-1 Sunderland: Player ratings and video goals

By on December 22, 2021

Arsenal booked their place in semi finals of the Carabao Cup with a routine 5-1 victory over Sunderland at the Emirates on Tuesday night.

We broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when Eddie Nketiah was on hand to poke home from close range after Rob Holding saw a header saved. Nicolas Pepe then made it 2-0 ten minutes later when he fired home into the top corner from inside the area.

Sunderland pulled one back when Nathan Broadhead raced clear to chip over Bernd Leno for 2-1 but Arsenal restored their two-goal cushion just after half-time when Nketiah flicked home with a lovely finish. The youngster then completed his hat-trick in the 58th minute when he made it 4-1 to Arsenal with another superb back-heeled flick.

Charlie Patino then came on to make his debut for the club and the 18-year-old made sure it was a night to remember after slotting home to make it 5-1 after more good work from Nicolas Pepe to set hm up.

Here are my ratings:

Leno  6/10 | Made a few routine saves and distribution was solid. Could perhaps have done better with the Sunderland goal.

Cedric  6.5/10 | Decent outing. Very adventurous going forward and got a good assist for the Pepe goal. Put in some nice crosses.

White  6/10 | Will be disappointed with the Sunderland goal but otherwise solid enough.

Holding  7/10 | A good solid display from the stand-in skipper. Didn’t put a foot wrong and went close with a header.

Tavares  7/10 | A constant threat down the left flank. Was involved in a couple of the goals and went close with a late effort himself.

Elneny  6/10 | Solid and unspectacular. A typical Elneny performance. Kept things simple and gave the ball to proper footballers.

Odegaard  8/10 | Ran the show at times. A stunning pass led to the fifth goal and played some lovely stuff. In terrific form right now.

Pepe  8.5/10 | Great to see him back to his best – albeit against limited opposition. Caused his full-back all sorts of problems and nut-megged him on numerous occasions. Set up a couple of goals and got himself on the scoresheet.

Smith Rowe  6.5/10 | A few nice moments but wasn’t as influential in a deeper role. Was overshadowed by his team mates.

Balogun  6/10 | A few good moments in the first half and went close to scoring, however, was subbed off early in the second period.

Nketiah  9/10 | A memorable night for the youngster after bagging a hat trick. Scored two superb flicks and showed he’s a true fox in the box. This will certainly have helped his cause during contract negotiations.

Subs:

Xhaka   7/10 | Controlled the game in the final 30 minutes.

Gabriel   6/10 | A decent 15 minutes.

Martinelli   6/10 | Caused a few problems as always

Patino  8/10 | What a dream debut for the 18-year-old. Slotted home a goal on his first appearance for Arsenal. Huge future ahead of him.
