Fabrizio Romano: Player completes Arsenal medical after Gunners agree late £16m deal

By on August 31, 2021

According to Fabrizio Romano, Takehiro Tomiyasu has completed his medical and will join Arsenal on a four-year deal after an agreement was reached to sign the defender from Bologna.

Mikel Arteta has been keen to bring in a right-back all summer and news broke this morning that Arsenal were in talks with Bologna over a deal to sign Tomiyasu on deadline day.

The Japan international was linked with a move to the Emirates earlier in the summer but we prioritised other areas. However, with Hector Bellerin on the verge of joining Real Betis on loan, the club stepped-up their pursuit of Tomiyasu.

Negotiations have reached a successful conclusion as Fabrizio Romano claims the paperwork has now been signed with the fee believed to be under £17m [€20m]. The Athletic claims the figure is actually £16m plus possible bonuses.

Romano says Tomiyasu has completed his medical and is now a ‘new Arsenal player’ so it looks like the deal should be announced any time now and be wrapped-up ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline.

The 22-year-old is comfortable playing at centre-back or right-back but I think it’s safe to assume he’ll be coming in to play on the right side of Arsenal’s back four this season.

He’ll basically be an upgrade on Calum Chambers as Tomiyasu is a defensive full-back who’s not known for his attacking instincts down the flank. The Japanese star is very solid in the air and excellent in one-on-one situations.

He stands at over 6ft and will slot into a back three whenever Kieran Tierney bombs forward down the left side so he should hopefully tighten things up at the back.

I expect any announcement to come once Bellerin’s move to Betis is confirmed so let’s hope there aren’t any late complications with either deal.

Tomiyasu is poised to become Arsenal’s sixth major signing of the summer following the arrivals of Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Nuno Tavares, Martin Odegaard and Albert Sambi Lokonga.
