Europa League quarter final draw: Fortunate Arsenal avoid big guns
Arsenal have been drawn to face Slavia Prague in the quarter-finals of the Europa League following todays draw.
We made hard work of our last-16 tie with Olympiacos in the previous round. A 3-1 away victory in Greece put Arsenal firmly in control after the first leg but a poor performance in the second leg led to a 1-0 defeat at the Emirates on Thursday.
We still went through 3-2 on aggregate, and that’s all that mattered I suppose, but we’ll have to play a lot better if we want to go all the way in the competition this year.
Up next we’ll have face Slavia Prague – who beat Rangers in the previous round. We’ll play the first leg at the Emirates on April 8th before the return leg in the Czech Republic on April 15th.
Mikel Arteta should be confident of beating Prague over two legs and if we do, we’ll face the winner of Dinamo Zagreb [who beat Tottenham] and Villarreal [Unai Emery] in the semi-finals.
It means we’ll avoided Manchester United, Ajax and AS Roma until the final as they’re all in the other side of the draw, so it’s the ideal situation for Arsenal to be in.
We shouldn’t think too far ahead, but this draw has given Arsenal a terrific chance of reaching the Europa League final this season.
