Arsenal boss confirms fresh injury blow + Tierney update
Arsenal have been dealt a blow with the news that Pablo Mari will miss ‘a few matches’ with a calf injury but it appears Kieran Tierney should be back in action soon.
Mari had been enjoying a fine fun of form in the middle of defence but was forced to miss Thursday nights 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace after suffering a calf problem in training the day before the game.
The issue was initially described as just ‘tightness’ by the clubs Twitter account last night as they said Mari was left out as a precaution but it looks as though it’s a little more serious as Mikel Arteta has now confirmed that the defender will miss ‘a few matches’.
It’s a blow to lose Mari but thankfully Gabriel Magalhaes is available again after missing Arsenal’s last five matches following a positive Covid test so we have plenty of cover in defence.
Arteta told Arsenal.com:
on Pablo Mari…
He had a calf injury in training [on Wednesday]. I think he will miss a few matches. He’s another one we will lose but we’ve got Gabi [Magalhaes] back after COVID, which is good news, we’ve got Thomas back as well. Let’s focus on the positives.
Tierney also missed the draw with Palace due to a muscle problem and Arteta said after the game the full-back would be sent for a scan to see how serious the issue was amid fears he could be facing a spell on the sidelines.
However, Football London are reporting that Tierney’s injury is just a slight calf strain and is NOT serious, and the Scottish international is targetting a return against Newcastle on Monday night.
This is excellent news as it would have been a huge blow to lose Tierney, so fingers crossed he’s passed fit to take the Magpies on Monday as he was sorely missed down the left flank against Palace.
