Arsenal team news: Arteta provides update on Partey, Luiz & Martinelli
Mikel Arteta has provided a team news update ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Burnley including the latest on Thomas Partey, Gabriel Martinelli and David Luiz.
After spending a month on the sidelines with a thigh injury, Partey was rushed back to start against Tottenham last weekend but the midfielder pulled up shortly before half time and was replaced by Dani Ceballos at the break.
Arteta has confirmed Partey aggravated the same area as before and is now set to miss the next ‘few games’. No fixed timescale has been put on Partey’s recovery as they’ll assess the injury as he recovers but this is a huge blow for Arsenal.
Luiz has missed the last couple of games after suffering a nasty cut to his head following his horrific clash with Raul Jimenez during Arsenal’s defeat to Wolves. The Brazilian will be assessed over the next 48 hours to determine whether he’ll be able to return to action against Burnley on Sunday.
There was some good news on Martinelli earlier this week as he made his long-awaited return with a run out for the U23s. He only lasted 45 minutes but Arteta has suggested it was a planned substitution and Martinelli came through the game well. Therefore, it was a positive step in his bid to return to first team action but the youngster isn’t expected to be in contention to face Burnley.
Arteta told Arsenal.com:
on the latest team news…
Martinelli played his first 45 minutes for a long time [for the under-21s against AFC Wimbledon], he was good and he came through the game and felt really good. He has trained. David [Luiz], we will have to assess him today and tomorrow to see how he is feeling and whether his is able to compete or not. Thomas will be out for a few games. It is the same area where he got injured previously, he felt it again and we will have to see how long it is going to take to heal.
Let’s hope Partey isn’t out for too long as Arsenal have lots of games coming up over the festive period. The good news is the squad is returning to good health with the likes of Martinelli, Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari all returning from long-term injuries recently.
Reiss Nelson and Sead Kolasinac missed the win over Dundalk on Thursday night due to minor knocks. Arteta didn’t mention them in his update so we’ll have to wait and see whether they’re involved on Sunday.
We head into the game this weekend sitting 15th in the Premier League table so Arsenal desperately need a win over Burnley to get our season back on track.
