According to reports today, Gabriel Magalhaes is due to undergo his medical with Arsenal on Friday before signing a five-year contract and completing his move from Lille.

Gabriel has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates over the past few weeks after Mikel Arteta identified the 22-year-old as a prime target as he looks to strengthen our leaky defence.

Arsenal have faced competition from a number of clubs for Gabriel’s signature, most notably from Napoli, but it looks as though we’ve won the race as the Telegraph claim Arsenal are set to sign the defender after agreeing an initial £22.6m deal with Lille.

The newspaper says Gabriel also agreed personal terms over a five-year contract with the club on Wednesday night so all that remains is for the South American central defender to undergo his medical.

According to Duncan Castles, Ian McGarry and Graham Hunter – who were talking on The Transfer Window podcast show today – Gabriel will undergo his medical on Friday. They suggest that the fee is closer to £27m but that may include add-ons with the base fee being nearer £22m.

The big question is how Gabriel will undergo his medical as due to government legislation, anyone travelling into the UK from France would have to self quarantine for 14 days, so the likelihood is the player will have his medical abroad.

Either way, I’m sure the club will figure out a way to get it done and hopefully Gabriel will be an Arsenal player soon as he’d be an excellent signing if we can get this proposed deal over the line.

The youngster has been one of the best centre-backs in French football over the past two years and was named in L’Equipe’s Team of the Season following a string of impressive performances at the heart of Lille’s defence.

Gabriel could form a rock solid partnership alongside William Saliba at the Emirates over the coming years and he’s a left footed ball playing centre-back – which is something we’ve been crying out for.

If we do manage to sign the Brazilian, Arteta will need to sell at least one, possibly two, of his current centre-backs. Sokratis is being strongly linked with a move to Italy while Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers or Rob Holding could also leave this summer.
