Team news: Arsenal confirm 28-year-old will miss FA Cup final + positive Leno update
Arsenal have confirmed a blow with the news that Shkodran Mustafi will miss the FA Cup final against Chelsea due to a hamstring injury.
Mustafi has really turned things around in recent months having put-in some solid performances at the back and he’s been virtually ever-present in the starting eleven since football returned in June.
However, the German defender was forced to miss our defeat at Aston Villa on Tuesday night after suffering a hamstring injury during the FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City last weekend.
Mikel Arteta suggested at his press conference yesterday that Mustafi was struggling to be fit for the FA Cup final and the club have now confirmed on Arsenal.com that the 28-year-old will miss our remaining two games, including the showpiece at Wembley.
However, there is a slightly better update on Bernd Leno as Arsenal have revealed the goalkeeper is due to resume full training next week so there’s a chance he could be in contention to face Chelsea.
A team news update on Arsenal.com ahead of our final Premier League game at Watford confirmed:
Bernd Leno
Right knee. Sustained moderate ligament sprain during Brighton & Hove (a) on June 20.
Now participating in outside running and ball drills. Aiming to be back in full training next week.Shkodran Mustafi
Right hamstring sustained during FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.
Will miss remaining matches of this season. Further details on recovery programme will be confirmed in the coming days.
It’s a big blow for Mustafi to miss his second FA Cup final but it gives Rob Holding a huge opportunity to stake his claim for a starting spot against Chelsea so he’ll be hoping to impress against Watford on Sunday.
Elsewhere, the club issued updates on our long-term absentees. Calum Chambers is still aiming to be back in full training later this year following a serious knee injury while Pablo Mari is expected to return to full training at some point in September as he steps-up his rehab from an ankle injury.
Gabriel Martinelli is continuing his recovery following knee surgery and the Brazilian attacker is due to return to full training by the end of the year.
