Arsenal vs Newcastle: Betting preview including team news and prediction

By on February 5, 2020

Mikel Arteta Arsenal

Arsenal desperately need to get their Premier League campaign back on track when we welcome Newcastle United to the Emirates after the winter break.

Sunday’s frustrating 0-0 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor summed up our season as we missed too many early chances and were fortunate not to lose the game in the end.

The stalemate made it four consecutive draws in the Premier League and it’s left Arsenal languishing way down in 10th position in the table – a whopping 10 points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.

Therefore, anything other than all three points next weekend against Newcastle and we can forget about finishing in the top four and winning the Europa League will be our only hope of getting back in the Champions League next season.

The good news is we’ll be up against a Newcastle side that have also struggled for wins lately as they’ve drawn five of their last eight games in all competitions and needed an extra-time winner to beat Oxford in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.

Team news

Arsenal will hope Sead Kolasinac is available again after he recovered from a thigh injury while Reiss Nelson could also be back in contention if he recovers from a hamstring problem that’s kept him out in recent games.

Kieran Tierney remains on the sidelines following shoulder surgery while Calum Chambers won’t play again this season due to a knee ligament injury but Bukayo Saka will hopefully shake-off a knee injury.

New signing Cedric Soares is still nursing a knee issue that he was carrying when he arrived on loan from Southampton but Pablo Mari will hope to be involved in the squad after joining from Flamengo on deadline day.

Newcastle have plenty of injury problems to contend with as Steve Bruce will be without Emil Krafth, Jonjo Shelvey, Javi Manquillo, Yoshinori Muto, Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll, Jack Colback, Paul Dummett and Jetro Williams for the trip to the Emirates.

Betting tips and prediction

I’m never confident Arsenal will win these days as we’re in such a mess right now and our form has been poor for so long, it feels like we just can’t win any game these days. However, Arsenal are expected to win this game with many football betting predictions tipping us to collect all three points. Bookmakers have Arsenal priced as the 2/7 favourites while Newcastle can be backed at 11/2 with the draw at 3/1.

Arsenal have an excellent recent record against Newcastle having won eight of the last nine meetings so hopefully we can continue that run. Arteta will have had plenty of time to prepare his squad for this game and I think we’ll just edge it with a 2-1 win – which can be backed at odds of 13/2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks a good bet for first goalscorer and we can bet on him to open the scoring in a 2-1 Arsenal win at odds of 14/1.
