‘Results not at the level we want’ – Arsenal issue statement on Unai Emery

Arsenal have acknowledged that our results and performances haven’t been good enough but Unai Emery appears to have been given the dreaded ‘vote of confidence’.
Arsenal sit eight points outside the top four following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Leicester City and we’ve won just two of our last 10 Premier League games having dropped points against the likes of Wolves, Sheffield United and Crystal Palace in recent weeks.
Our shocking form has seen the pressure mount on Emery’s shoulders with a growing number of fans making it clear they no longer support the manager or feel he’s the right man to take us forward.
Some online polls have shown over 90% of supporters want Emery sacked, which is staggering when you consider even at his worst Arsene Wenger only used to get around 70-75% of fans wanting him gone.
With fans, former players and pundits all calling for Emery to be sacked, Arsenal have now issued a public vote of confidence during a staff even on Monday that was attended by around 200 staff members.
Head of football Raul Sanllehi and managing director Vinai Venkatesham made a statement at the event making it clear that results and performances haven’t been good enough and things need to improve if we’re to make the fop four. However, they insist the club are behind Emery and feel he’ll turn things around.
The statement said, according to Goal:
“We are as disappointed as everyone else with both our results and performances at this stage of the season. We share the frustration with our fans, Unai, players and all our staff as they are not at the level we want or expect.
“Things need to improve to meet our objectives for the season, and we firmly believe Unai is the right man for the job, together with the backroom team we have in place. We are all working intensively behind the scenes to turn things around and are confident we will.
“We never take our fantastic support for granted. We hope we can all stick together and get behind the team in this challenging period, as together we are stronger.”
This is what’s called the dreaded ‘vote of confidence’ and I think the writing is on the wall for Emery. The club have made it clear he needs to turn things around quickly if he’s to have a chance of meeting his objective for the season, which is to qualify for the Champions League. If things don’t improve, he’ll be gone.
The next few weeks are going to be pivotal and Arsenal will need to pick up some wins against the likes of Southampton, Norwich, Brighton and West Ham after the international break.
Emery’s future should be a lot clearer by the time we welcome Manchester City to the Emirates on December 15th. If we get on a winning run over the coming weeks then he’ll have bought himself some time over the Christmas period. But if our woeful form continues after the international break, then I think a new man will be in charge by the time we play City.
