Arsenal lodge enquiry over signing £18m attacker, player keen on move

By on June 14, 2018

According to the Mirror, Arsenal have lodged an enquiry with Borussia Dortmund about signing Mario Gotze with the attacker available for just £18m this summer.

Gotze was once considered to be one of the most exciting young attacking midfielders on the planet after starring for Dortmund between 2009 and 2013 having progressed through their youth ranks.

That form earned him a move to Bayern Munich and while he won three consecutive Bundesliga titles, he struggled to establish himself at the Allianz Arena and he eventually made an emotional return to Dortmund two years ago.

However, Gotze has failed to rediscover his best form at the Westfalonstadion with a metabolic disease leading to fatigue and weight gain, and his troubles saw him left out of Joachim Lowe’s squad for this summers World Cup finals.

It seems Gotze is now eyeing a fresh start as the Mirror claim he wants to come to the Premier League to rejuvenate his career and Arsenal are among the clubs to have registered their interest.

The newspaper says we’ve been joined by the likes of Everton, West Ham, Leicester and Newcastle in making enquiries over the player and Dortmund are believed to be ready to cash-in for just £18m this summer.

That kind of money would be a bargain if we could get Gotze showing anywhere near the kind of form we know he’s capable of and the Mirror claim he is confident he can get back to his best soon.

Unai Emery has been concentrating his efforts on improving our defensive frailties with Stephan Lichtsteiner snapped up on a free while centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, goalkeeper Bernd Leno and midfielder Lucas Torreira have all been strongly linked.

However, we could also do with adding to our attacking options and Gotze’s versatility would be a useful asset as he’s capable of playing anywhere across the attacking midfield positions while he’s also played as a ‘false 9’ during his career.

We’ll have to see how things go but I think £18m is a gamble worth taking on a player who’s scored the winner in a World Cup final and has the ability to be a top class attacker again.
