From Spain: Arsenal open talks over deal to sign £130m midfield star
According to reports in Spain via the Mirror, Arsenal have opened talks with Atletico Madrid over a stunning deal to sign £130m midfielder Saul Niguez this summer.
Arsene Wenger is under pressure to revamp his squad following another poor Premier League campaign and central midfield is an area we need to strengthen.
Jack Wilshere is being tipped to leave when his contract expires in June while Aaron Ramsey is approaching the final year of his deal and he’s no closer to signing an extension.
Santi Cazorla is also unlikely to play for the club again due to a serious ankle injury so we need to sign at least one new midfielder and it looks as though Wenger has an ambitious target in mind.
The Mirror are citing reports from AS that claim Arsenal have made contact with Atletico Madrid to discuss a potential deal to sign Saul Niguez at the end of the season.
Saul has been one of the best central midfielders in La Liga in recent years having starred for Atletico and he’s also now a regular with the Spanish national team so obviously he’d be an excellent signing.
However, the 23-year-old is under contract until 2026 and the Spanish publication suggest Madrid are unlikely to do business for anything less than his whopping £130m release clause.
There is virtually no chance Arsenal would agree to pay that kind of money but even if we did we aren’t the only team in the running as several other top European clubs have expressed their interest.
Not only that, but the report says Saul is happy at Atletico and has shown no sign he wants to leave this summer so it looks like our pursuit of the midfielder is going to end as quickly as it began.
