Arsenal in talks over cut-price deal to sign £40m midfielder
According to a report in the Daily Star, Arsenal are in talks with Sporting Lisbon over a potential deal to sign midfielder William Carvalho this summer.
Arsene Wenger is on the look out for further new signings after only bringing in two additions so far this summer – namely defender Sead Kolasniac and striker Alexandre Lacazette.
I, like many fans, feel central midfield is an area we desperately need to strengthen and it looks like the boss agrees as the Daily Star are reporting that we’ve renewed our interest in Carvalho.
The Portuguese international has long been linked with a move to the Emirates with his name cropping up practically every transfer window since 2014 and this summer is no exception.
The Daily Star cite a report from Portuguese outlet Record that claims Arsenal have opened talks with Sporting over a potential deal and Wenger is understood to be preparing a formal offer.
We might be able to bag a bit of a bargain as although Carvalho has a £40m release clause written in to his contract, the report suggests Sporting are willing to cash-in at just £27m.
That kind of money is a relative steal in today’s market so you can see why Wenger might be tempted to sign the 25-year-old, if these reports are accurate.
Carvalho is a powerful central midfielder who’s a regular with the Portuguese national team while he’s also capable of playing at centre-back if required, so he would be a useful addition to the squad.

However, I’m not looking too much in to these reports until something more concrete comes out as we see speculation linking Carvalho with Arsenal all the time and nothing ever comes of it.
Perhaps this summer might be different but I won’t be holding my breath….

Imho, the defence is still a problem area. Until Wenger gets it right,he can forget about winning the epl.He is too focused on attack .
The 3-0 beating by Chelsea maybe a one off,but if things don’t improve during CS game, you can bet there will be disgruntled voices.
