£26m attacker snubs Chelsea after deciding he wants to join Arsenal

By on June 24, 2017

According to a report in The Sun, Riyad Mahrez has snubbed interest from Chelsea and Liverpool in favour of joining Arsenal to play under Arsene Wenger at the Emirates.

Mahrez was strongly linked with a move to Arsenal last summer before deciding to remain with Leicester and sign a new deal ahead of their maiden voyage in to the Champions League.

The Algerian international struggled to replicate the kind of form that saw him score 17 goals to help fire the Foxes to a shock title win in 2016 and he’s now set to finally leave the King Power after handing in a written transfer request.

Speculation over a move to Arsenal has resurfaced after Wenger publicly admitted earlier this month that he remains a huge fan of Mahrez and hinted that he may bid for the attacker this summer.

It looks like a deal could now be on the cards as The Sun are citing reports coming for Mahrez’s homeland that claim the player has snubbed interest from Chelsea and Liverpool in favour of joining Arsenal.

The newspaper report says the 26-year-old has decided to turn down the chance to play Champions League football with the champions in order to continue his career under the tutelage of Wenger in north London.

The Sun states that Mahrez has already informed Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha of his decision and Arsenal could get a deal agreed for as little as £26m this summer.

That figure seems incredibly low to me considering some of the prices we’ve seen so far this summer but it does look like Mahrez will be on the move soon and a transfer to Arsenal is seemingly on the cards.

I’s a big fan and think he’d be an excellent addition to the squad, especially if we could get him back to his 2015/16 form that saw him land the PFA Player of the Year award.

However, my concern is that Wenger is eyeing Mahrez as a possible replacement for either Alexis Sanchez or Mesut Ozil as contract extension talks with the pair continue to drag on.
