Chelsea to scupper Arsenal’s move for £25m international?

By on January 24, 2017

According to reports today, Arsenal are keen on a deal to sign Ricardo Rodriguez this summer but will now face competition from Chelsea and Marseille for the £25m-rated Wolfsburg defender.

Rodriguez has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates for the past year with speculation last summer suggesting that Arsene Wenger had identified the left-back as a potential signing should Kieran Gibbs leave the club.

Gibbsy ended up staying so no deal for Rodriguez was pursued but with the England international continuing to play second fiddle to Nacho Monreal this season, it appears the boss is already making plans for the summer.

I don’t think it would be a surprise to anyone if Gibbs was to finally leave north London at the end of the season as he’s in the final 18 months of his contract and is clearly not going to force his way in to Wenger’s first team any time soon.

So if Gibbs is sold then a new full-back is going to be needed and it appears the boss has maintained his interest in Rodriguez as the Mirror claim we’re keen on signing the Swiss international this summer.

Rodriguez is expected to leave Wolfsburg at the end of the season and the paper says he’ll be available for around £25m, which seems pretty reasonable in today’s over inflated market.

However, we aren’t the only club in the running as the Mirror cite L’Equipe as saying that both Chelsea and Marseille are also vying for Rodriguez’s signature so we’ll face some stiff competition for the 24-year-old.

Let’s see how things develop but I think Rodriguez would be an excellent replacement for Gibbs. I don’t think Monreal has had his best season either so if the Swiss star settled well, he has the potential to become our first choice left-back.
