Replacement for Giroud? Wenger plots move for Swedish starlet

By on September 8, 2016

According to the Mirror, Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Sunderland wonderkid Joel Asoro as Arsene Wenger eyes a move for the Swedish youngster.

Asoro has emerged as one of the hottest young talents in English football since breaking through the Sunderland youth academy earlier this year following his move from Swedish outfit IF Bromma.

The 17-year-old is now a regular part of David Moyes’ first team squad and made his debut during the Black Cats 2-1 defeat to Middlesbrough last month while he’s also been named on the bench for their two other league games.

Asoro has understandably caught the attention of several top clubs and the Mirror claim that Arsenal are among those who are monitoring the teenagers progress ahead of a potential swoop.

The newspaper says that Arsene stepped-up his pursuit after sending scouts to watch the teenager make his debut for the Swedish U21’s as they played out a 1-1 draw with Spain earlier this week.

Sunderland are obviously keen to keep hold of the talented striker and they are under no pressure to cash-in as Asoro is under contract at the Stadium of Light until 2019 but I’m sure we could persuade them to sell if we put in a tempting offer.

You’d also like to think that Asoro would jump at the chance to join a club like Arsenal, especially given Wenger’s reputation for giving youth a chance, so this is one potential deal we should keep a close eye on ahead of the January window.

Asoro is a central striker who’s known for his pace so he could be viewed as a possible long-term replacement for Olivier Giroud if we do end up signing him – although he’s obviously got a long way to go before he’ll be able to command a regular first team place at Arsenal.
