Fresh Theo Walcott Injury Update

We have another update on Theo Walcott’s injury situation with the Telegraph reporting that the Arsenal attacker has been ruled out for five weeks.

Walcott suffered a calf injury just 15 minutes after after replacing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – who was also injured – during our Capital One Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in midweek.

Arsene Wenger initially indicated that both players would miss three weeks but the boss then revealed at his press conference yesterday that Walcott’s injury was worse than first thought but he refused to put an exactly timescale on the attacker’s return.

However, the Telegraph are reporting that Theo is expected to miss the next five weeks meaning he’ll sit out our games against Swansea, Bayern Munich and Tottenham before the international break as well as subsequent games versus West Brom, Dinamo Zagreb and Norwich.

Walcott will then be pushing to make his return when we entertain Sunderland at the Emirates on December 5th. If he fails to make that game, he could return to the squad for our crucial Champions League clash at Olympiacos the following Wednesday.

Arsene gave the newspapers a bit more information on how the injury came about. He told the Telegraph:

“The gut feeling is one (Oxlade-Chamberlain) will be 20 days and one will be longer,”

“Walcott thinks he got a kick on his ankle and he felt it displaced a little. Then, your calf doesn’t work in the right position, then you can get an injury because it extends a little bit too much in a different position. You cannot plan everything. Players have to be robust.”

This news is a huge blow and it looks like Theo is now set to miss at least six games – which is a real shame as he was in great form and had established himself as our first choice striker in recent weeks.

With Danny Welbeck also injured until the New Year, the onus is now on Olivier Giroud to lead the line over the next five weeks and it’s going to be a big ask of the Frenchman.

If only we’d have bought another striker in the summer, eh…..
