Wenger confirms key man is expected to miss Chelsea clash
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Per Mertesacker is expected to miss tomorrow’s Premier League clash at Chelsea.
Mertesacker hasn’t featured since our 1-0 win away at Crystal Palace last month after picking up a virus that’s proven difficult to shift.
The German giant has already missed games against Liverpool, Newcastle, Stoke and Dinamo Zagreb and it looks as though he could once again miss out tomorrow.
Despite returning to full training, Arsene says Per still looks a ‘bit short’ of fitness and although he’ll be given a late test, it looks like the defender may not make it.
Arsene told Arsenal.com:
Mertesacker may still be a bit short, I have to decide that today (Friday).
It was an illness.
It will be a blow to lose Mertesacker as we need all the options we can get heading to Stamford Bridge. However, Gabriel has performed extremely well these past few weeks so he should continue alongside Laurent Koscielny at the heart of defence tomorrow.
The only problem will be if either get injured as we could only have Calum Chambers to call upon, and I wouldn’t fancy him playing away to the defending champions.
