TEAM NEWS: Wenger On Arteta, Welbeck, Koscielny & Szczesny
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been speaking at his pre-match press conference this morning ahead of tomorrow’s clash with West Brom and gave an update on the fitness of several of our first team regulars.
Let’s start with the bad news and Wojciech Szczesny is a major doubt as he’s yet to return to training after picking up a rib injury against Manchester United last weekend, so unless the keeper is able to train today he’ll almost certainly miss the trip to the Hawthorns.
Should the Polish international miss out, then youngster Emiliano Martinez will continue in goal as David Ospina is also out with a thigh injury.
Danny Welbeck has also missed the Borussia Dortmund game due to a knee injury and the striker will face a late fitness test this morning to see if he’ll return to the squad tomorrow.
If Welbeck is ruled out, Olivier Giroud could make his first start since late August as Yaya Sanogo is expected to miss out with a hamstring problem.
The boss also confirmed that Mikel Arteta is out with a calf injury but contrary to some newspaper reports, the skipper could only be out for two to three weeks, which would be a big boost.
Laurent Koscielny was an unused substitute for Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Dortmund after recovering from an Achilles injury and Arsene says the Frenchman is available to start tomorrow if selected.
Here is what the boss has been telling reporters this morning:
Welbeck has a "knee and a hamstring problem". Arteta "for the third time a calf problem". Minimum two to three weeks. #afc
