Wenger ‘Determined To Spend Big’ On 5 New Signings – Report

By on April 24, 2014

Widespread reports today are claiming that Arsene Wenger WILL sign a new deal at the end of the season and is already making plans to spend at least £70m this summer.

The bosses future has been cast in doubt after our capitulation in recent months with some suggesting the 64-year-old could be set to call it a day after 18 years at the helm.

However, the Mirror are one of several newspapers who are reporting that the Frenchman has now decided he will definitely be signing a two-year extension and hopes to do it after we end our trophy drought by beating Hull in the FA Cup final next month.

Obviously it will turn out to be a well-timed announcement if we win the cup and have secured fourth place, but I’m not sure how well it will be received by some sections of the Arsenal support if we fail to achieve either of those targets.

Either way, it seems Arsene is set to stay and will be given at least £70m to spend this summer and he’s ‘determined to spend big’ on five new players. A new goalkeeper to support Wojceich Szczesny will be required as Lukasz Fabianski is leaving when his contract expires in June, while a right back may also be needed if Bacary Sagna also walks away this summer and Southampton’s Calum Chambers is among those being watched.

Predictably, a big-name striker is on the agenda and the Mirror claim Bayern Munich’s Mario Mandzukic is on Wenger’s hit-list while a pacey winger will also be pursued with Real Sociedad’s Antoine Griezmann being closely monitored.

The final position the boss wants to strengthen is central midfield and the report states that we’re interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley. I’m not sure who their ‘sources’ are but I’ll eat my hat if we sign him!

It’s fair to say that those five positions all need strengthened this summer, although the need for a right back will depend on what Sagna’s decides. The one area the Mirror failed to recognise is centre-back and I’ll be majorly surprised if we don’t bring in at least one this summer. We only have three at present with Sagna our fourth-choice, and if Vermaelen AND Sagna leave we will need at least two central defenders this summer.

So it’s going to be a busy few months in the transfer market over the summer and I hope we can get our business done early. What players would you like to see us sign this summer?

Wenger need a good pacesetter at the right back. A goal getter infront. And a good central midfielder.

I’m sorry but fans like yourself suggesting we sign players of Curtis Davies’ ability are part of the problem. If we want to be challenging for trophies we cannot be setting our sights on players who have won nothing and neither posses great ability.
We need to be back challenging for Titles and not top 4!

jokes all the time, next he will say there is nothing coming through.
he failed to strengthen the time in January when it was very clear Walcott, Giroud and the hopeless Bendtner. Can you depend on Sonongo as a striker

we can’t win anything with giroud, sanogo upfront we could be sixth next season if they don’t quit. pliz sign quality and release quantity (giroud, sanogo, diaby, monreal, jenkinson)

Wenger should jus t quit at the end of the season. Visionless. How could we move from title contenders to fighting for 4th position. Arsenal lack depth and this is because Wenger is too stuborn to sign players who can cover up for injuries.

If he stays he needs to spend big money, which he hates doing. I would like him to sign Mandzukic (Bayern), Griezman (R Sociedad, Aurier (Toulouse), Drmic (Nurnburg), Bender (B Leverkusen) Rojo (S Lisbon), Marshall (Cardiff).
Outgoing, Sagna (free), Vermaelen (5m), Podolski (10m), Monreal (5m), Bendtner (free), Park (free), Fabianski (free).

If Cesc becomes available, offer Barcelona a swap deal for Cazorla.

Nice, intelligent thinking. For your ins – I’m not sure that Mandzukic is the right guy for us. I guess it depends on whether we’re looking for someone to play with, or instead of, Giroud. For your outs – I’d be really sorry to see Pod, Fabianski & Sagna leave: Fabianski’s really improved his game; Sagna is our best RB and great CB cover – both should have been tied down ages ago. Unfortunately none of my ins are really realistic. I love players like Carvalho, Hummels, Isco, Draxler, Deulofeu but I can’t see us getting any of them.

Mandzukic is a downgrade on Giroud. Cleverly is a downgrade on Denilson. Replacing two quality players with similar players takes us nowhere forward. That only leaves Greizman as the only exciting acquisition. If that’s how it pans out, I am signing up for the Wenger Out campaign.

I think our problem at Arsenal is the greed for spending money . Last year Wenger was given 100million to spend and he only managed to spend on Ozil 37million , Sanogo … which means there is an accumulative balance of +60million . We expect the powers that be to top-up another 100million if they want to see this team reach the level of the Barca , Bayern , Real Madrid etc …. With 70million dollars I dont see those versatile players coming into the team and we wll end up just playing cards as uasual at the end of the day . The management should top-up that amount to at least 120million dollars for one to expect any achievement . A team with no fear factor would only hurt us the more cum next season . If the management is just happy wth the team’s hanging on 4th position and players like the Sanogos , Giroud flooding the team then we only contend that 70million is ok for trying our hands on snooker .
