Walcott On Taunting Spurs Fans: “I Don’t Regret It At All”
Theo Walcott has been speaking at length for the first time since suffering a serious knee injury against Tottenham.
The Arsenal forward saw his season ended after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee during the final stages of our FA Cup win on the 4th January.
As he was stretchered from the field, Walcott famously gestured “2-0” to the away supporters with his hands which led to a barrage of coins being thrown in his direction from the angry Spurs fans.
Ironically, two of the men who carried him from the field that day were in fact Tottenham supporters, and Theo’s revealed that they eventually had to ask him to stop as they too were being caught in the line of fire.
However, the 24-year-old insists he doesn’t regret it. He told the Guardian newspaper:
“Yeah, two of them [stretcher-bearers] were Spurs fans,”
“The guys actually said: ‘Theo, can you stop now?'”. I did stop eventually, as soon as I got in front of the Arsenal fans, and they were throwing scarves. I stopped, yeah. I will have to treat those guys to some cupcakes or something.”
“I don’t regret it at all,”
Walcott was criticised by some for ‘inciting a riot’ that day, but the winger insists coins were being thrown at him and the doctors BEFORE his gesture, but reiterated that it was just a bit of harmless banter.
“All the stewards and the doctors were getting stuff peppered at them even before. Me and Tottenham … you always do that banter. They do it to me. I do it to them. I have seen some Tottenham fans since then and they have said that, if it was one of their players, they would have loved it. It was just a bit of fun.”
Theo went on to reveal that he’s now out of his knee brace and has started the long road to recovery, and should be back for the early stages of next season.
