Arsenal Boosted In Luis Suarez Pursuit As New Details Emerge

By on August 2, 2013

We’ve been boosted in our pursuit of Luis Suarez after it’s emerged that the striker is furious with Liverpool for breaking a verbal agreement allowing him to leave to play in the Champions League this summer and he’s ready to force his move to the Emirates before the transfer window closes.

The Mirror claim Suarez met with boss Brendan Rodgers and MD Ian Ayre back in June where he told the club he wanted to leave this summer. It’s alleged they verbally agreed to sell to any club who has qualified for the Champions League – including Arsenal – but the only team they’d refuse to sell to was Manchester United.

The Uruguayan is believed to have been left stunned when Liverpool then rejected Arsenal’s £40,000,001 offer almost two weeks ago, and the newspaper claims he’s now so angry and frustrated that he’s ready to force his way out of Anfield in order to move to north London.

It’s also understood that, despite reports earlier in the week suggesting otherwise, he’s not ruled out taking legal action against the club if they continue to block his exit because his advisers are adamant the striker should be allowed to leave for Arsenal.

This would possibly explain the impasse and why Arsenal were so confident we’d sign him for just over £40m. Suarez’s advisers would no doubt have briefed Arsenal on this ‘verbal agreement’ and suggested we bid £40,000,001 to activate the ‘clause’ that meant Liverpool had to inform them of any bid over £40m. With Liverpool being forced to tell Suarez’s camp of a serious bid from a team qualified for the Champions League, Suarez could then pursue the move due to the verbal agreement they made in June.

However, it seems as though Liverpool are refusing to hold up their end of the bargain and decided they didn’t want to sell to Arsenal, who they no doubt see as their biggest competition for fourth place next season.

So where does this leave us then? Well if this report is accurate, it tells us Suarez is angry and wants to leave Liverpool, despite Ian Ayre and Brendan Rodgers telling us that he’s ‘happy and understands the clubs position’, but more importantly it also tells us Suarez is prepared to force his way out.

He’s got previous for doing this. He took his case to a Dutch tribunal to force a move from Groningen to Ajax in 2007 and he then went on strike to force a move to Liverpool in 2011, so there’s no reason why he won’t do the same to force his move to Arsenal – especially if Liverpool have broken promises to him.

Of course verbal agreements mean very little if the case went to a Premier League hearing, but the fact Suarez is furious with the club will almost surely mean they’ve got to sell and right now, we’re the only interested party.

No matter how talented he is, no club wants to keep hold of an unhappy player, especially when another club is willing to pay in excess of £40m for him. So I still expect Suarez will be sold, I just hope it’s to us and we don’t get gazumped by Madrid.

Do you think Suarez will end up joining Arsenal? Or will Madrid make a late move?

If he’s so furious. Why hasn’t he handed in a transfer request ? Personally i think the next couple of days will be telling. If he plays at Anfield in Gerrard’s testimonial on Saturday, big chance its Real or he stays. If he doesn’t play, well then ?

let Luis Suarez be angry, it dont make any difference. He has contract with Liverpool and this is a fact and cannot do much if he has commercial contract.

This story makes me laugh , it’s funny the story is coming from an biased arsenal fan who seems to be very desperate like a lot of gunners lately ! LFC are in controller of this 1 totally, they will not sell Suarez to arsenal , a mean do arsenal think LFC have just come out of mental institute or sum thing? Why on earth would We sell a player in the top 4 in the world at the moment to are main rivals ? It doesn’t make sense at all,
    NOW FOR THE TRUTH
LFC have informed Suarez of the interest as they were obliged to do so, but LFC have also said to Suarez that he will not be sold under any circumstances to AFC as they are main rivals even Suarez understands that,BUT if a club overseas came calling with the right offer LFC will not stand in suarezs way!
But with barca and bayern s squad almost complete, then Real Madrid is only 1 left and if they buy bale with the other 50 mill they have already spent doubt it very much they will bid for Suarez!
So I think the magic of Suarez will be roaming the anfield turf in a LFC KIT for next 12 months.

The story is from the Mirror’s John cross, who is an arsenal supporter who writes stuff that arsenal wants to come out in the press. luis might be angry but their is little he can do, a verbal agreement isn’t worth the paper it’s not written on.

So a verbal agreement isnt worth anything…just sums up both yr club and its supporters.. maybe he thought that if he was promised something he could trust those making the promise to honour that promise naive maybe but then again why do u expect him to carry on playing for a club who have, it seems, lied to him

This is all laughable. You Gooners are pure idiots!! For a start if Bale is worth 90 million or whatever then Suarez is worth at least the same. Liverpool should stick to their guns and blow Arsenal away, they are a Mickey Mouse club with nothing in the trophy cabinate for at least 8 years. Liverpool have been in a re-building process and had a lot of upheaval in the last 3 or 4 seasons, since we got rid of the Cowboys of Dallas, hence their league position. After having to deal with the retarded Hodgson then the wasteful Dalglish, Liverpool now have a manager pushing us in the right direction. If we manage to keep hold of Suarez, then with Countinho, Sturridge, Sterling, Ibe and the couple of other signings plus maybe even Costa then we are going to surprise a few people and teams this season. United, City and Chelsea are in transition, Arsenal are the perennial under-achievers never winning anything these days and that One-Man Team Tottenham are just about to lose the player who IS their team. The guy who won them about 20 points on his own last season.

First of all I don’t understand why all the bile and hatred is coming from the Liverpool fans? We made a bid for one of your players, so what??? No need to lose the plot over it.

Secondly saying that Liverpool hold all the cards is just silly. Suarez wants to leave, I think that much is plain and if he really wants to he can force Liverpool into selling him by refusing to train or play. Now Liverpool could keep him on their books paying his wages until his contract runs down but they are not going to treat an asset like that. If he makes enough noise he will get his move. He wont hand in a transfer request until he has no further options as this may negate any bonus payments to him or even cause some level of financial penalty.

Thirdly saying that a verbal agreement is not worth anything is incorrect. Verbal agreements are a form of contract and if Suarez can convince a judge that such an agreement existed he could successfully sue Liverpool for breach of contract. It is a complex argument but not without precedent.

And finally, Liverpool has a more successful past that Arsenal, no one argues that. But, their future is not as bright. They have one world class player who wants to leave and another one who is really on the wane (Gerrard) and the rest of the team looks ok, nothing more. If Suarez stay at Liverpool there is a change he will get Champs League football in a years time, I’d say it less than a 40% chance and most bookies would agree with me. However if he moves to Arsenal CL football is almost 100% certain and there is a real chance that he could win the league title.
So career wise Arsenal is a better place for him to be.

And now I wait for the personal attacks…….

    • Matt

      August 2, 2013 at 2:11 pm

Make you just about right here apart from one thing:

Suarez has absolutely no need to hand in a written transfer request. That really wouldn’t be worth the paper it’s written on!

The talk of foregoing bonuses is bullshit. A player’s bonuses (much like yours and mine) are paid once a year (most likely in May). If the player has been at the club all season he gets 100% of his earnt bonuses, if he joins part way through he will get pro rata.

When Suarez leaves all he is doing is foregoing any 13/14 bonuses for May.

If Liverpool do try and write a term of his sale to stop a bonus payment anyway, the buying club, be it Arsenal or Madrid woluld almost certainly make it good for the player anyway.

Suarez will leave Liverpool for Arsenal this summer. I would say there is a good chance in a years time he will try again for Madrid anyway. Liverpool know this – hence why they are buying the replacements now before he leaves – exactly as they did with Suarez and Carroll when they prepared to sell Torres.

Maybe so Vims but I can’t see you being there next season unless you sign Suarez. And you can hope for it as much as you like but Liverpool have said they will not be selling him to you or any other premiership side.

Personally I’d be after Fabregas if this first option clause exists but I’m guessing he may even choose Utd over Arsenal. Says a lot about your club and where it’s heading I think.

  20. JD

    August 2, 2013 at 2:02 pm

I feel sorry for Arsenal fans really. Having to pay £1000+ a season, lining the pockets of the board, who in return make plenty of noises about funds being available – yet year on year your transfer policy reeks of panic.

I read the comments here and wonder if some of you live in the real world. Do you honestly think anyone of the LFC board turned around to Suarez in June and said ‘if we get a bid of £35m for a CL club we’ll sell you’? If you believe that then you really are deluded. Firstly the figure of £35m is woefully low so if there was any ‘verbal agreement’ you can bet your life the figure is much higher.

Hence why we have rejected both your bids immediately, and why 2 weeks later Suarez hasn’t taken the case to the Premier league to review the contract, nor handed in a transfer request.

I’m not gonna start on which club is bigger or about trophies. Yes you have CL football (should you qualify for the group stages) but other than that you have to say Arsenal have been a selling club for a few years and if you compare the squads then I think there’s little in it on the pitch. We’ve already added 4 new players and look set to splash £22 million on a new striker too so again it looks as if one club is actually willing to spend money while Arsenal are just trying to flatter their fans every time they get their season ticket renewal forms through.

But tell me – why are Arsenal not fighting tooth and nail to get Fabregas back if there’s a supposed first option on him? If he ended up at Utd what does that say about Arsenal on the whole?

I look forward to the season ahead and competing with your lot for a top 4 space. I am looking forward to it because I think we will achieve it – at your expense.

Liverpool fc should concentrate on overtaking their neighbours (Everton) this season rather than claiming to be Arsenal’s rivals.Arsenal fc are miles ahead of Liverpool fc now, though LfC could have more trophies than AFC but the truth is that was in the past, we are talking of current status and quality. If LFC would accept the fact that Man Citeh and Chelshit are bigger than them then why not AFC.luis Suarez understands he has outgrown LFC that is all, END OF STORY.

Apparently Galway Gooner is the only person who has spoken with a sense of apt understanding of the matter at hand. Others are either just being emotional or insanely inept. Someone saying verbal agreement doesn’t hold water is like saying the pope isn’t a catholic. Agreement only comes in two form verbal or written while one is more substantive than the other, both are still an agreement.

Secondly, there is a simple rule in Management all over the world, remove sentiments, you can’t do an unhappy employee especially if you can control his mechanism….. For instance, can Liverpool determine how we’ll Suarez play on the field and control it…. The dude own his leg, can choose to pass when he ought to shoot… It’s not rocket science. Liverpool have a lot to loose. While its hard to sell a major player to a “rival” it’s still the only sane thing to do when such a players actually wants to leave and much devastating when such player feels betrayed.

Liverpool should remove emotion, if he wants to go sell up, reinvest and get quality and committed players to achieve your goal…. Suarez is a journey man, after a year or two at Arsenal he is off again, that’s just the truth.

    • JD

      August 2, 2013 at 2:12 pm

Sorry Sethorunzi but I do not agree with your logic. Just because your club has been a feeder for Manchester clubs recently doesn’t mean Liverpool are.

Perhaps that’s the biggest difference between the 2 clubs. Gerrard flirted with Chelsea twice, did he go? Nope. Sure, we sold Torres, but we got the best years out of him and made a huge profit. When your best players jump ship they kick on to bigger and better things.

      • vims

        August 2, 2013 at 2:22 pm

JD — I think our first 11 is well ahead of yours and if we get Suarez they will be mile apart. Slagging and insult trading aside I’ve seen nothing from Brendan Rogers to suggest that he is up to the Liverpool job, he talks a great game I’ll give him that but his results simply don’t back up the talk. But footballs all about opinions.

You may or may not be aware but Arsenal have been busy paying off a £470m bill on a new stadium we built recently hence the need to balance the books. Arsenal, unfortunately haven’t been able to make reserved and sensible buys like say downing for 20m or Henderson for 20m or even Carrol for 35m and have been forced to fork out less that 14m on unknowns like Carzola, Podolski and the like. Hopefully once the stadium debt is cleared we can adopt the Liverpool transfer model.

On the Cesc issue, the clause only comes into effect once Barca accept a bid. So we have to wait until United agree a 50m fee before we can get him back for 25m.

Liverpool is not worth being called a big club in EPL anymore… If they are a big club, then Everton is much bigger…. Liverpool is nowhere near Arsenal in rivalry, 23 yrs without a League trophy… Arsenal sold top players for fun(even RVP whos is a lot better than Suarez) and still remain in the top 4 while Liverpool selling ”ONLY” Xabi Alonso and ‘buuuuf…’ they are outta the top 4…what a shame… Man Utd sold Ronaldo and still won the league, Chelsea sold a few players including Drogba and co. and still remained top 4….what is Looserpool’s excuse…? Players vs players, Arsenal has more quality players/household names…. Sterlin Sturrage(whom chelsea chased out) are no match for only Walcott… Hello, Toure once played for Arsenal when he was still KOLO TOURE not this mess that Man City abandoned and Liverpool…sorry…LOOSEPOOL happily grabed like a fat kid grabbing candy….! Arsenal is nolonger intrested in a top 4 finish alone, we are aiming for higher grounds like Top 2 finish, Champions League Final(I believe you Looserpool fans still remember the CL, right…well, whatever)…so Looserpool, good luck with ur ‘finishing 4th dreams’….and yeah..remember, u are GUNNER do it without Suarez this coming season… Enough Said… COYG….!

Nice try but allow me to retort…… How many of your bids have been accepted by Liverpool for Suarez?

      • Dom

        August 2, 2013 at 3:07 pm

The fact is that, at the moment, Arsenal have made 2 bids both of which were turned down. Another bid may well prove to be enough, at the moment Arsenal will be trying to pay as little as possible while liverpool will be trying for as much as they can get, what Liverpool really need is another club to enter the bidding be it Real Madrid or whoever, until that happens the stalemate will continue until the final day of the transfer window when the power in this particular transfer struggle will swing in Arsenal’s way, because, like it or not, no club no matter their size or status wants an unhappy player in their camp, the damage that player can cause is immeasurable.
