Brendan Rodgers Speaks Out On Arsenal’s Suarez Bid

By on July 18, 2013

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has had his say on Arsenal’s bid for Luis Suarez and if you read between the lines, he all-but confirms the striker can leave if the price is right.

We made an official move for the controversial Uruguayan last week, as confirmed by Liverpool MD Ian Ayre, which was believed to be in the region of £30m. The Reds rejected the bid immediately but reports claim we’re planning on going back with an improved bid which should be closer to the £40m mark.

Rodgers was quizzed on the future of the 26-year-old today and he spouted off the usual lines saying the player isn’t for sale, he has three years on his contract and he’s looking forward to working with him, etc. Nothing you wouldn’t expect. These are all routine answers, as he’s never going to come out and say anything else. Rodgers also confirmed Arsenal’s bid but reiterated it didn’t meet his valuation:

‘He is a wonderful player, and he is still very much a Liverpool player. No matter who the player is, nobody is bigger than Liverpool Football Club.

‘Luis is a very important member of this squad and I am looking forward to working with him again this season. There has been lots of speculation about Luis moving to another club but, as I said, he is very much a Liverpool player.

‘We had an offer that was nowhere near what we value him at. Of course he wants to work and play at the top level. But unless something drastic happens, he will be staying here. He has got three years left on his contract.’ Rodgers is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail

The interesting lines for me are:

  • nobody is bigger than Liverpool Football Club” – was there any need to say this? I feel it was a dig at Suarez.
  • nowhere near what we value him at” – gives the impression Liverpool have a valuation in mind. If Suarez was strictly not for sale, Rodgers would have said that instead of saying we didn’t meet their valuation.
  • unless something drastic happens” – like you receiving a suitable offer? Or perhaps the player handing in a transfer request?

Reading between the lines, I think the message from Rodgers is this:

We want Suarez to stay but no player is bigger than LFC so if he hand’s in a transfer request and we get a suitable offer, he’ll be sold.

I’m sure Liverpool fans, and maybe Arsenal fans too, will disagree, but this is what I took from Rodgers comments and I think this is the stance Liverpool are taking with the while situation. They won’t want a disruptive influence in the dressing room, no matter how talented he is, so if they can get an offer in excess of £40m they’ll give it serious consideration. No doubt they’ll hope Madrid will come in as they won’t want to sell to a domestic rival, but the Spaniard’s are yet to make any formal offer.

Things will get really interesting on Monday when Suarez is due to meet up with the rest of the Liverpool squad in Australia. Will Rodgers be able to convince him to stay? Will Suarez walk in an hand in a written transfer request? Or will this saga just drag on right until the final days of the window? Watch this space…

Keep reading Brendan’s comments your way… it’s obviously therapy for you… while also making you feel better about Arsenal’s shocking lack of big name signings over the years and the fact you’ve won nothing in that time either… and people bang on about Liverpool fans being delusional!!!

If (and I mean IF!) he goes, it will be to a massive foreign club who can afford the transfer fee (Around 50-55 mill) and his wages – not some domestic team currently on a par with L.F.C.

Ed…as a arsenal fan i still agree with much of what you have said. Sadly though, despite being a historical powerhouse, you are not on par with arsenal. I would like trophies, but players want to play in the Champions league.

      @ Ed,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I must have missed all your success and big name signings in recent seasons. You lot enjoying playing Thursday/Sunday football? Oh sorry, you didn’t even manage to qualify for the Europa did you? Don’t tell me, you were in a ‘transition year’, right?

The fact your still saying ‘IF’ Suarez goes shows who’s the delusional one here mate. I’m under no illusion that we won’t be Suarez’s first choice but the lack of interest from other clubs means we have a chance.

Excuse me, there is nothing delusional about the fact you have been behind for the past god knows how many years even without the ‘big name’ signings you bleat about. You have got a great history which we cannot compete with but to say we are on a par with LFC at the moment is simply laughable. Sorry at the present time we are streets ahead of you! And have been really the entire Premiership era.

the part wear rogers says,, no one is bigger than the club,, is what he said at the time when the racist stuff was happening and nothing to do with his latest comments, they have put the two together to put a fresh twist on it, pathetic, also how long has it been since the first bid was made and no follow up.

So Arsenal are in the Champions League every year but what’s the point, except to increase their bank balance, they never seriously look like winning it!! In fact they haven’t won anything for 8 years whereas Liverpool for all their troubles have won the Champions League, FA Cup and league Cup in that time!!

There is no way Suarez will end up at Arsenal. Liverpool wont accept less than £50m and he wouldn’t go there anyway because he wants to win things and he has more chance of doing that at Anfield

The point is by increasing the bank balance it enables us to compete for players like Suarez which before now due to the stadium move we haven’t been able to. Once we get the ball rolling with a few big signings we will win trophies again just as we have done consistently throughout our history. The move the Emirates put our ability to compete at the top back a little but we are now moving out of that era. Work it out Sherlock

Suarez will be playing for Arsenal, with all this hidden message in Rodgers speeches, don’t be surprise if a deal is not closer than we think. Wenger is a very secretive manager

Have u guys considered Wayne joining Ars& the combination of Theo & Wayne at Ars which can b transferred to da National team.Higuain’s performance in EPL is questionable along with behavioral problems Suarez whom LFP are overpricing.Perez is proving arrogant& yet we are in no hurry of a striker,If I were Wenger I would offer £18,£22,£35&£19 million for Higuain,Rooney,Suarez& benteke respectively & secure the signing of only one of them

£35m for Suarez ?!! When Bale is valued at £80m and other players eg Cavani have gone for £50m. Dream on.

Bob have you ever made a sensible comment in your life, the point your missing is if there is a £40 million buyout clause in the contract and that is offered and the player wants to go then there is little the club can do even if they do value him higher? Of course I do not know if there clause really exists but that seems to be the assumption everybody is working to.

Slightly off topic, but why do Arsenal come out and say they have tons of money and then end up buying mediocre players every season? Why can’t they just say they do not have money if they don’t. In that case, fans won’t be frustrated at lack of spending, and if they do end up buying someone eventually, us fans will welcome it as a pleasant surprise.
