Belgian Wants Arsenal Move But Board Reluctant To Finance £50m Deal
Despite all the talk of Arsenal being prepared to spend big this summer, it seems the club still have limits that they’re willing to go to in order to sign proven talent.
A report today from the Daily Mail claims that Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini wants to make the move to north London this summer but the club are apparently unwilling to match his £100,000-a-week wages and stump up the £50m it’s going to take to sign him.
The Belgian is understood to have a £22m release clause in his contract and when you consider a long-term contract worth £100,000-per-week, signing on fees, agents fees, etc, it’s easy to see how the transfer could hit the £50m mark.
Fellaini is reportedly on £75,000-a-week at Everton so it’s understandable that he’d want a pay rise if he was to join us and £100k isn’t unreasonable in today’s market. You can be sure the likes of Chelsea or United will give him that if they come in for him.
The Mail also suggest the 25-year-old wants assurances from Arsene Wenger that he will be played in a central midfield role if he joins, and not deployed as a second striker as he was at Everton last season. I wouldn’t see this being an issue as if we do sign him, I’m certain Wenger will want him as a central midfielder. We’ve already got the likes of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere to play the No.10 role, and lumping it up to a big man isn’t really our game.
I see Fellaini as a powerful box-to-box midfielder who can also play the disciplined holding role when required. Personally, I’d pay what’s required to sign him and I’d get the deal done quickly. We’ve got the money and the player wants to join, so let’s push ahead before someone else comes in and blows us out the water.
