Arsenal Had Deal In Place For Striker But £12.7m Move Was Vetoed
Some slightly irritating news coming from Spain today Gooners with Catalan media outlet Mundo Deportivo reporting Arsenal had agreed personal terms with David Villa back in January only for Tito Vilanova to block a £12.7m move at the last minute.
I’m sure most Arsenal fans will remember all the speculation over Villa during the January window and it appears we came extremely close to securing his services with personal terms apparently agreed and Barca officials open to the idea of selling the 31-year-old striker.
However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Vilanova insisted our £12.7m offer was rejected and vetoed the move as he felt Villa was needed during the second half of the season. What a w*nker!
I’d would have loved to have seen Villa at Arsenal and while it turns out we managed to clinch fourth spot without him, I feel it would have been a lot more comfortable had Spain’s all-time top-scorer been available to boss Arsene Wenger during the second half of last term.
Barcelona are now ready to cash-in on the ageing star but it appears we’ve ended our interest and moved on to younger targets, such as Gonzalo Higuain. While I’m eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Argentinean, unfortunately it looks at though Villa could end up at our rivals Tottenham with a £8.4m bid said to be in the offing.
He’s still far too good for that lot and I’ll honestly be gutted if he goes there. Surely there are still some Champions League clubs who want a player of Villa’s quality, despite his age? No? Well if not, why don’t we snap him up as well as Higuain? You can’t have too many top class strikers after all….
