Wenger Offers Walcott Fitness Update
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has given an update on the fitness of Theo Walcott and it looks like he wont be rushing the attacker back in to action any time soon.
Walcott has been out since rupturing his cruciate ligament in January and he stepped up his recovery over the summer months.
The 25-year-old started ball-work again in June and was running freely in July, and Arsene has previously revealed that the speedster would return to full training at the end of August.
Obviously it’s going to take some time for Theo to get back up to speed so there is virtually no chance he’ll be in the squad to face Manchester City after the international break, as some fans have suggested.
The Telegraph claim that the boss plans to give Walcott a couple of games with the Under-21’s before considering him for the first team. If all goes to plan and he doesn’t suffer any set-backs, then Theo should be in contention towards the end of September.
On Walcott’s fitness, Wenger said:
“He’s doing well, but we’ll respect the time. We have plenty of players who can fill in that role and we will respect the delay.”
“The timing with Theo is end of the month to join in again, after the break in full training.” he told the Telegraph
It’s going to be a huge boost to have Walcott available again as he was sorely missed last year and I still think we’d have pushed for the title had he stayed fit.
But he’s now edging closer to his comeback and fingers crossed he might be able to start against Southampton in the Capital One Cup clash on Tuesday 23rd September.
If he comes through that okay then he should be in contention to face Tottenham at the Emirates on the 27th. What a game that would be to mark his Premier League comeback…
