German star speaks-out on reported Arsenal ‘offer’

German centre-back Mats Hummels has confirmed that Arsenal failed to formalise their interest in him with a formal offer before he agreed to join Bayern Munich this summer.
Hummels is a name that’s been constantly linked with a move to the Premier League in recent transfer windows with Arsenal among the clubs that have been credited with an interest.
The Metro reported back in April that we were trying to lure the 27-year-old to the Emirates after it emerged that he wanted to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer in search of a new challenge.
Arsene Wenger has been tipped to bring in a new central defender to partner Laurent Koscielny and fans were drooling over the thought of Hummels lining-up alongside our French defender next season.
Soon after those reports it was announced that Hummels was joining Bayern Munich and supporters were left frustrated that another world class talent had seemingly turned us down.
However, Hummels has now put the record straight and confirmed that while there was contact with clubs like Arsenal, we never put forward a firm offer which meant he choose to remain in Germany with Bayern.
Hummels is quoted as saying by the Express:
“I don’t have to beat about the bush, and pretend they [Arsenal] wanted me. There was no offer.
“The same applies for Spain, there was always contact but no option right now. That’s why I now have made the fundamental decision to continue my career in Germany.”
So there you have it, we didn’t even put forward a proposal to Hummels, which is hugely disappointing as he would have been a sensational signing had we managed to lure him to North London.
To make it even more frustrating, Hummels seems to suggest in these comments that he would have considered joining Arsenal [or a club in Spain] if we had put an offer on the table.
Arsenal open talks over deal for 25-goal hitman
Perhaps his agent was asking for huge wages from the English clubs but I’ll be fuming if Wenger decided against moving for Hummels if there was a deal to be done as he would have finally solved our problems at the back.
