Arsenal are making enquiries over a possible deal to sign Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea this summer, according to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari.
Chelsea’s poor performances and results in the second half of last season drew widespread criticism, not just from fans but also from the club’s players.
Fernandez was particularly vocal about the situation, expressing dismay over the club’s decision to part ways with Enzo Maresca.
Speaking after Chelsea’s 3-0 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, Fernandez criticised the club’s decision, which led to his two-game suspension in April.
He said, ‘I don’t understand it either.’
‘Sometimes there are things that we as players don’t understand, how and in what way they try to manage things.
‘Obviously, it was a departure that hurt us a lot because we had an identity. He gave us an order, even though, as is the way of football, sometimes it’s good and bad.
‘But he always had a very clear identity when it came to training and playing, and obviously his departure hurt us a lot, especially in the middle of the season; it cuts everything short.’
Now, according to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, Fernandez is ‘pushing’ to depart Stamford Bridge this summer.
As a result, the midfielder has attracted interest from several clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester City, and his preferred choice, Real Madrid, according to the journalist.
Audacious swoop
However, it appears the Premier League champions are looking to trump their rivals, with Longari adding that the north London giants have made enquiries over his potential transfer to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
Although there have been slight expectations, the 25-year-old could yet remain at Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Xabi Alonso as head coach.
However, Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, has publicly revealed that the former Benfica star wants to leave Chelsea this summer, with Arsenal now showing interest.
In an interview with the Spanish outlet MARCA, Pastore said, ‘Today the player is calmly focused on the national team; he’s playing in a World Cup, he’s very close to advancing to the round of 16…’
‘He’s only thinking about that, and we’re looking at possibilities for him to leave Chelsea, but there’s nothing firm or confirmed with any club.’
Despite Fernández expressing his desire to leave, Chelsea are unwilling to lower their asking price, with the fee expected to exceed his £77m Transfermarkt valuation. It will be interesting to see whether Arsenal are prepared to meet the Blues’ demands.
